Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Robinson, Sargent, and more

Fulham padded its lead at the top of the English Football League Championship on Saturday and Antonee Robinson delivered his latest impressive shift for Marco Silva’s side.

Robinson played 90 minutes alongside international teammate Tim Ream, helping Fulham defeat Stoke City 3-2 at the Bet365 Stadium. The U.S. men’s national team left back logged another 90 minutes this league season, making four interceptions and winning five of his eight individual duels. Robinson also made six recoveries in the match and was a constant threat down the left wing as Fulham used a 72nd minute winner from Jamaican international Bobby Reid to claim three points.

The 24-year-old Robinson will now embark to the United States for involvement in the penultimate round of World Cup Qualifying. The USMNT opens its schedule on January 27th at home against El Salvador.

In Spain, Yunus Musah scored his first La Liga goal of the season while Sergino Dest played 90 minutes in Barcelona’s road win over Alaves.

In England, Josh Sargent scored twice for Norwich City in its lopsided road victory over Watford. Christian Pulisic was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s London Derby triumph over Tottenham. Daryl Dike earned his first start for West Bromwich Albion, but was substituted off early in the second half after suffering a hamstring injury.

In Italy, Weston McKennie went the distance for Juventus in its scoreless draw with rivals AC Milan. Tanner Tessmann earned his first league start since mid-December, but Venezia fell 2-1 at Inter Milan on Saturday.

In France, Erik Palmer-Brown remained in Troyes’ starting lineup, but the club could not avoid a road loss to Angers. Tim Weah made his first appearance of 2022 for Lille in Saturday’s road defeat to Stade Brest.

Elsewhere, Luca De La Torre played 90 minutes as Heracles earned a draw with Go Ahead Eagles while Christian Ramirez scored his 12th goal in all competitions this season for Aberdeen. Kyle Duncan made his debut for Belgian side Oostende in a 2-1 loss to Royal Antwerp on Friday. Sebastian Saucedo started for Pumas at home against Tigres, but could not help his team avoid defeat.

  1. Saw Durkin play last week against Club Brugge, Tajon Buchanan’s new team. Durkin didn’t look any better than anyone out there. If you didn’t know anything about him, you would just think he’s another squad player for them.

If he was still in MLS, would you still select him for the USMNT? Don’t know what the big deal with him is, and I don’t think he would be a starter for DCU even if the season started today. I would take Duane Holmes before selecting him for the NT.

    • H3- You’ve been down with SBI too long to not be paying attention. Since when was has the defensive midfield, become a must see position? Busquets, Fabinho, Jorginho, Kante, aren’t rockstars. When a 6 plays well, they don’t get any glory. (Like an O-line in tackle football). Otasowie plays for Brugge but you mentioned Tajon Buchanan, tells me your preference is to watch attacking players. You didn’t mention Durkin’s recent match, but only watch his match against the biggest club in Belgium? He’s been in Belgium Jupiler league longer than the he was in the MLS. Context- Tyler Adams has officially played just as many seasons in the Bundesliga as in the MLS. I noticed, US fans who only care about big clubs are extremely dismissive about the actual sport. If the club isn’t worth a billion dollars or close to it, then the team is not worth paying attention is the silliest sports mentality ever! Anyone who has taken their time to watch Huddlesfield Town play, knows Holmes has been playing left/right winger, 2nd striker and attacking midfield, this year and doesn’t play defensive midfield. Holmes to Durkin comparison is as lazy as Jesus Ferreira and Dike. They don’t play the same position. Durkin is 6’, and closer to 200 lbs, and can make 30 yard passes with either foot. I like Holmes, but he hasn’t played with all the 2000 born players, who are on the Senior team (Sands, Richards, McKenzie, Weah, Sargent, Dest). Holmes hasn’t played with some fringe talent (Mendez, Ledezma, Pomykal, Servania). …and players a year younger like Llanez & Konrad. He’s not a dual national and Russell Canouse was more/less the starting 6, so C Durk’s left to Belgium for playing time. You poo poo that away, but we’ve seen players make a move to respectable leagues only to return to the MLS.

This group wouldn’t win a best of three with the current roster for this week but they’d hold their own. Gets pretty thin in midfield and backline with Busio and Green out. If Horvath got hurt they’d be in a lot of trouble.

    • While that was fun. On balance, I like the picks GB actually made better.

It does show how much better the US pool of players is now than it was 4 years ago.

    • Very Interesting! JR! Surprised Holmes, or Harkes didn’t make your lineup for one of the 8‘s. …and no Cardoso as your backup 6. I know, he’s rated higher than Servania, Yueill, Perea, & Otasowie. Who would be the 6, in your lineup? I see you prefer young GK’s applying their trade in Europe vs Guzan or Marcinkowski. (Great point you made about Vassilev. Completely agree.)

      • I just went with guys currently in Europe didn’t think about Harkes, or Ramirez until I’d already posted. I suppose Mueller too. I heard Duane is on Covid protocol as well, but I didn’t confirm.
