Daryl Dike’s new challenge in England got underway on Saturday with the American striker making his debut for English second tier club West Bromwich Albion.
Dike played the final 31 minutes in London on Saturday, watching as his side fell 1-0 to hosts Queens Park Rangers. The former Orlando City forward replaced Matthew Phillips in the 59th minute, but was unable to help Valentin Ismael’s side avoid defeat.
The 21-year-old won five of his 12 duels in the match and also drew two fouls and won three of his eight aerial battles. Dike added physicality to the Baggies attack, teaming up with Callum Robinson and Karlan Grant for the final half hour of the match.
Charlie Austin’s 89th minute winner condemned West Brom to defeat on the afternoon, bumping them down to fifth place in the English Football League Championship standings.
Dike’s arrival at the Hawthorns should provide a needed boost for the Baggies, which has now failed to win their last four league matches. Grant leads the team with nine goals scored, but Dike could provide help after notching 23 combined goals for club and country in an impressive 2021 calendar year.
West Brom will be favored to rebound in matches against Peterborough United and Preston North End, two positive opportunities for Dike to open his scoring account for this new club.
