Ethan Horvath had to wait over five months to get back on the field for Nottingham Forest and the American goalkeeper did not disappoint in earning his first shutout with the English club.
Horvath filled in for the suspended Brice Samba on Tuesday and made four saves in Nottingham Forest’s 0-0 draw with Preston North End. It was the U.S. men’s national team shot-stopper’s first appearance for the club since September 15 and Horvath did not look out of place in his 90-minute outing. Horvath made three saves in the second-half as Preston piled on the pressure, but the 26-year-old stood tall as Steve Cooper’s side left Deepdale with a point in their fight for promotion.
“In the second half, we never really got going and they piled on the pressure,” Cooper said postmatch in a club interview. “Ethan Horvath, who I thought was excellent, made a great save.”
Nottingham Forest sits in eighth place, five points back of the final playoff place in the English Football League Championship. Horvath will likely remain in goal this weekend as Cooper’s squad returns to the City Ground to host Bristol City.
In Europa Conference League action, Konrad De La Fuente scored his first goal for Ligue 1 side Marseille in a 3-0 second leg win over FK Qarabag. Marseille advanced into the quarterfinals after a 6-1 aggregate scoreline. De La Fuente started in last week’s first leg and came off the bench today to seal a lopsided win on Azerbaijan soil. The USMNT forward took advantage of an errant back pass and chipped home his first goal for the club. He would finish the match on the field as Marseille will learn its quarterfinal opponents on Friday.
In Europe, Christian Pulisic scored his first Champions League goal of this season’s tournament as Chelsea edged Lille at home. Weston McKennie suffered a foot injury for Juventus, which will rule him out of the second leg vs. Villarreal in March. Sergino Dest impressed for Barcelona as the La Liga club advanced in the Europa League.
In England, Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson helped Fulham claim a 2-1 win over Peterborough United while Marlon Fossey continued to rack up minutes with League One side Bolton Wanderers. Lynden Gooch returned to action with Sunderland, making his first appearance since Feb. 5.
