Macario, Mewis, Smith headline USWNT roster for SheBelieves Cup

The U.S. women’s national team kicks off its 2022 schedule in two weeks at the annual SheBelieves Cup and Vlatko Andonovski has plenty of talent to call on for a run at the trophy.

Catarina Macario, Kristie Mewis, and Sophia Smith headlined Andonovski’s 23-player roster for the tournament, as the USWNT aims for a third-straight triumph. Lindsey Horan, Abby Dahlkemper, and Kelley O’Hara are the only three players with 100 caps earned or more to be named to the roster.

2021 NWSL Rookie of the Year and 2021 U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year Trinity Rodman has been named as a training player in the buildup to the tournament’s kickoff on February 17.

“We had a great camp in Austin and now we need to see this group of players in game environments against highly-motivated opponents,” said Andonovski. “Every player in the pool is focused on making the roster for World Cup and Olympic qualifying this summer, and every training session and especially every match is a means to that end for them, and for the coaching staff. The SheBelieves Cup is also a great opportunity to help prepare for rhythm of group play at the Concacaf W Championship as we have to face three different opponents and different styles of play over a short period of time.”

The USWNT will face the Czech Republic in its opener on Feb. 17 before also taking on New Zealand on Feb. 20 and Iceland on Feb. 23. Carson, California and Frisco, Texas will both host matches during the tournament.
