Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Steffen, Horvath, and more

Zack Steffen earned his first start in over one month on Sunday, making a trio of key saves as Manchester City advanced into the FA Cup semifinals.

Sunday’s 4-1 win over Southampton featured Steffen in goal for Pep Guardiola’s side and the American made his opportunity count at St. Mary’s Stadium. With Man City leading 2-1, Steffen denied Che Adams from point-blank range before the Citizens would eventually add two additional goals later in the half. The U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper had missed the last few weeks due to a back injury, but returned on Sunday and has some much-needed confidence heading into World Cup Qualifying.

Elsewhere in England, Christian Pulisic started in his second straight match for Chelsea while Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United fought back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 at Wolves. Ethan Horvath made five saves for Nottingham Forest, but the EFL Championship side was eliminated from the FA Cup by Liverpool.

In Spain, Yunus Musah logged 72 minutes on Saturday as Valencia claimed a 1-0 road win over Elche. Sergino Dest remained sidelined for Barcelona through injury.

In France, Tim Weah was shown a red card in Lille’s 1-0 road victory over Nantes. It was the first ejection of Weah’s senior career. Erik Palmer-Brown logged 90 minutes as Troyes earned a 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne on Friday.
