Argentinian side Velez Sarsfield needed a victory on Tuesday night to have any chance of advancing in the Copa Libertadores tournament and Joel Sonora helped the hosts do just that with a dominant win on home soil.
Sonora logged 77 minutes from the start as Velez Sarsfield defeated Estudiantes 4-0, finishing second behind the group winners in the annual competition. The 25-year-old assisted once, created the most chances (2) and won six of his 13 duels in the match, delivering a lively performance in a confident win for Julio Vaccari’s side. Sonora has logged one goal and two assists across all competitions since the start of April, continuing to earn opportunities in the Velez Sarsfield lineup.
Velez Sarsfield will now enter a short break in its competitive schedule, but will learn its fate for the Round of 16 on Friday knowing giant South American clubs including Palmeiras, River Plate, and Flamengo all remain in the competition.
In Germany, Terrence Boyd and Kaiserslautern earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga after defeating Dynamo Dresden 2-0 over two legs.
In Denmark, Emmanuel Sabbi logged 103 minutes for Odense, but the Superliagen side fell 4-3 in penalties to Midtjylland in the Danish Cup Final.
