Matt Turner’s transfer to English Premier League side Arsenal is officially set to begin.

Turner has arrived in London ahead of Arsenal’s preseason camp, the club announced Monday. The former New England Revolution goalkeeper recently ended his loan spell back in MLS and will now prepare for his first involvement with his new club this summer.

Turner made 102 appearances for the Revolution during his six years with the MLS side, being voted both the fans’ and teammates Most Valuable Player in 2020. A former Fairfield University product, Turner enjoyed major success in MLS in 2021, winning the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award, being named to the MLS Best XI, and also featuring in the MLS All-Star Game.

“Matt is an experienced goalkeeper who will bring high quality to our squad,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. “He has shown with his performances in recent years in both the MLS and at international level with the United States that he is a goalkeeper who will give us added strength going into next season. We welcome Matt and his family to the club and we look forward to working together in the years to come.”

Turner has earned 18 caps to date for the U.S. men’s national team, helping Gregg Berhalter’s side win the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2021. The 28-year-old also featured in Concacaf World Cup Qualifying, helping the Americans clinch a berth into the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

“We are delighted that Matt is joining us,” Arsenal technical director Edu said. “Matt is a goalkeeper with established qualities and experience, who will be a great addition to our squad. We identified Matt some time ago and worked hard to ensure that his transfer was complete so he could join us in time for our pre-season in July. We now look forward to Matt joining us, settling into his new home and working ahead of next season.”

Turner becomes the second USMNT goalkeeper in the Premier League, joining international teammate Zack Steffen.

Um, third? — Ethan Horvath & Nottingham Forest? Unfortunately, all back ups. Also, noise about Steffen leaving Man City. So, maybe back to 2.
