USMNT vs. Uruguay: SBI Match Night

The U.S. men’s national team will face the toughest test of its four-game stretch of June matches on Sunday, with fellow World Cup participant Uruguay providing the challenge at Children’s Mercy Park (5 p.m. ET, FOX).

The Americans are fresh off an impressive 3-0 win vs. Morocco on Wednesday, with Christian Pulisic and Matt Turner starring on the night. Turner takes a seat tonight, with Sean Johnson getting the nod in goal.

Here is the full USMNT lineup to face Uruguay:

Here is the Uruguay starting lineup to face the Americans.

Edinson Cavani is not in the starting lineup for Uruguay, but dangerous Benfica winger Darwin Nunez leads the attack. The Uruguay central defense is a tough unit with tons of experience, and will make things difficult for Jesus Ferreira, Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah.

  1. About the 65th minute the US looked like they were happy to play for a draw and the intensity really dropped. They were a little lucky to get the draw, but we created some good chances, so that result was close to what was deserved.

  2. Decent game. Had some chances and so did Uruguay. For me Pulisic wasn’t that influential anything good came from Weah in that first half. Pulisic was a bit sloppy most of the game. Looking forward to Reyna getting back with this group. Ferreira is still the best option at the 9. Hopefully he figures out his shooting boots soon. Or maybe Weah does get pushed up to the 9. He will probably see plenty of that position next year with Lille. Oh and both Yedlin and Scally were a bit poor. Can’t wait to get back Dest.

  3. FT: USMNT 0 – Uruguay 0. Sean Johnson with a few key saves for the Americans while Jesus Ferreira had the best offensive look. A flattering scoreline for the Americans who now prepare for Concacaf Nations League play on Friday in Texas.

    • Not really flattering at all. Pretty much the result justified from this game. Not like Uruguay was that good because they weren’t.

    • Of course, EPB just got a touch on the ball as it came to Cavani so that Cavani had to reach for it and did not make great contact.

  5. 67th minute, Uruguay taking advantage of CP allowing soace too deliver balls from midfield. he’s got to pressure that, come on, 2 in a row

  6. This is how you know Uruguay are stacked. The beat Mexico with a COMPLETELY different team (with the exception of J. Gimenez)……and are now playing the USMNT and looking dangerous.

We are looking really good, though Scally is a little out of step with the pace of the game. Lets see how things go with the changes…

    GGGGGGOOOOOOOOO USA!!!!!

  7. EPB on at half, losing Robinson really a blow, hope Richards gets to the top of his game to pair with Zimmerman.
Ariolla on at half, frankly I’d like to see Weah continue.
BA on at half for Weston was already planned..

I would have thought Wright would get a full half also.
Scally looking like a guy in his first start.
Need more consistent transition from Yedlin.
Getting fouled a lot.. Not fun

  8. US is playing pretty well. Scally not yet ready for the WC, though. Still having problem with attackers getting free in our box, some disorganization that shouldn’t be happening when 3 of your 4 defenders are experienced and have played together a lot.

  9. 18th minute, the number of hard fouls has doubled, still no yellow but injuries coming soon if nothing changes

  10. Great challenge from Joe Scally eventually leads to an attack from the USMNT that eventually sees Weah’s cross deflected out for a corner. McKennie’s acrobatic attempt skies over the bar. 15′

  11. Not the best start for the USMNT, Uruguay is pressing hard and making it tough for the US to break down La Celeste. Still early but this is why you play quality opponents 0-0 12′

  12. Nice work from Yedlin to clear an Uruguay shot off the line from Godin.

USA a bit lucky there not to give up a goal.

Uruguay’s pressing is causing some problems for the USMNT defense.

  13. our left side is a mess, Yunus and CP need to pressure the ball, not happening and getting overun there early

  14. No dangerous looks for either team through the first 10 minutes, though Uruguay has had a few balls served into the area, but Uruguay hasn’t been able to put a dangerous chance on goal.

Joe Scally being put to the test early on.

    • The team needs to look at some other options and Johnson has earned the look. No Steffen and Turner is a good bet to start three of four matches in June so there’s no problem with giving Johnson a chance here.
