A trio of American players remained in the running for the 2022 Golden Boy Award on Saturday as the list was trimmed down to 80.

Gio Reyna, Yunus Musah and Malik Tillman all were in the 80-player shortlist, announced by Tuttosport on Saturday. Fellow U.S. men’s national team player Joe Scally did not make the cut, as the shortlist was trimmed from 100 to 80 for the first time in this year’s edition of the award.

Reyna is back preparing with Borussia Dortmund after missing most of the 2021-22 campaign through injury. The 19-year-old attacker scored two goals and added two assists in 13 combined appearances last season for the Bundesliga club.

Musah enjoyed a successful sophomore campaign in La Liga with Valencia, scoring three goals and adding one assist in 36 combined appearances. The 19-year-old is poised to continue growing as a midfielder as Gennaro Gattuso takes over for Jose Bordalas this season.

Musah also earned 13 caps for the USMNT since the start of the World Cup Qualifying cycle, helping Gregg Berhalter’s squad clinch a spot to Qatar 2022.

Tillman is currently on loan with Scottish Premiership club Rangers from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. The 20-year-old made 15 appearances with Bayern II last season, scoring four goals. He also made seven appearances in Julian Nagelsmann’s first team, scoring once in German Cup action.

A former German youth national team player, Tillman made a one-time international switch to represent the USMNT in May. He made his USMNT debut in a 3-0 friendly win over Morocco on June 2 before also featuring in a 5-0 Nations League victory over Grenada later that month.

Barcelona and Spain youngster Pedri is the most recent winner of the Golden Boy award, while many other current stars have won the award including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland.
