Americans Abroad Weekend Preview: Adams, Aaronson begin Leeds United careers, and more

Leeds United fought off relegation last season in the English Premier League and with U.S. men’s national team midfielders Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson coming into Jesse Marsch’s squad, the Lilywhites will be a tough out for anyone in the new campaign.

Both Adams and Aaronson will be pushing for competitive debuts for Leeds United on Saturday with Wolves making the trip to Elland Road in the season opener. Adams logged 36 appearances in all competitions for RB Leipzig last season before earning a permanent transfer to be reunited with Marsch in Yorkshire. The USMNT midfielder will have big shoes to fill this season with Kalvin Phillips joining Manchester City, but familiarity with his manager should play a key role for Adams.

Aaronson also made the move to England this summer, earning a permanent transfer of his own from Red Bull Salzburg. The former Philadelphia Union homegrown delivered his best season yet as a professional player, totaling six goals and 10 assists in 41 combined appearances for Salzburg last season. Aaronson is also reunited with his former manager in Marsch, after enjoying a successful first campaign in Austria with the 48-year-old in 2020-21.

Elsewhere in England, Christian Pulisic and Chelsea visit Everton in league action while Chris Richards will hope to make his debut vs. Arsenal. Zack Steffen and Daryl Dike headline the American contingent in the EFL Championship.

In Germany, Ricardo Pepi and Jordan Pefok will be fighting for goals this season as the USMNT striking pair kick off their league seasons. Gio Reyna and Borussia Dortmund host Bayer Leverkusen in the weekend’s top Bundesliga showdown.

In Italy, Gianluca Busio and Andrija Novakovich headline four American first team players at Venezia.

In France, Tim Weah and Erik Palmer-Brown begin their league seasons against Auxerre and Montpellier respectively.

Elsewhere, Reggie Cannon and Boavista kick off their league season in Portgual against Portimonense. Richie Ledezma and Cole Bassett begin their league schedules in the Eredivisie. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Celtic visit Ross County in Scottish league action.

  1. When did Novakovich go to Venezia? I completely missed that news. Venezia may have more Americans on their roster now than any other European team has had. I remember when Fulham had McBride, Keller and Bocanegra at the same time, but I think that was their max.
