Ricardo Pepi began his loan spell with Dutch side FC Groningen on Sunday and played a key role in an important road victory for the club.
Pepi came off the bench at Cambuur and set up the winning goal in a 1-0 result. It was Pepi’s first appearance for the Eredivisie side following his loan move from FC Augsburg. Pepi helped spring a counter-attack in the 71st minute, laying off a pass out wide to a streaking Tomas Suslov. Suslov eventually cut onto his left foot before hitting a low drive into the bottom-right corner of Joao Virginia’s net. Pepi logged 45 minutes in his club debut, completing seven of nine passes, winning four duels, and completing two tackles. The 19-year-old will now be pushing to start FC Groningen’s final match this month, a Sept. 17 road match at Sparta Rotterdam.

With the postponement of matches in the UK, I hope it allows for some clubs & players to right the ship a little. Chelsea under new management needed a reset. I’m hoping that this will improve Pulisic’s match minutes.
Overall the rest of our players are doing well and are going to make it difficult for Gregg to select a roster for September friendlies and the squad for the WC. Our CF’s are on a good run of form (goals and assists). Our midfield (MMA & Aaronson) are seeing consistent minutes and performing.
The only concerns I have at the moment are our Keepers, Dest, Luca, and Weah…struggling to adjust to their new clubs. But there is still time for them to get healthy and get into a run of form ahead of the WC.
Glad to see Reynolds starting again. Definitely a player for the 2026 cycle.
Honest question….where does Reynolds realistically fit for the 2026 cycle. Yes he’s a talented player, but RB is one of our deepest positions with Dest and Scally the likely top 2 options based on experience and leagues. Then there’s Cannon & Moore (GB rates them both highly) as the probable “B-Team” options. Can Reynolds work his way ahead of Cannon & Moore….I think so, but will Gregg.
If Dest gets moved to LB more permanently than Reynolds could sneak into the
A-Team….but there is real competition at the 2026 LB spot as well with Robinson, Gomez, Vines, Bello, Jones, Paredes, & Tolkin looking like they’ll all be in the running.
Reynolds has the physical size (6’3″) to potentially be used as a RCB in a back 4 or if we move to a back 3 and use wing-backs he’d possibly be an interesting option considering his base skill set. But even CB is looking like it could be hard to break into (Richards, Reynolds, Pierie, Trusty, Che, McKenzie, Sands, EPB, CCV, and M. Robinson). The competition for defensive positions is going to be fierce next cycle.
There are some significant talents in the running as well as solid contributors.
Pepi comes in during the 46th minute and proves the assist in the 71st minute. Awesome!!! It sucks that the Groningen FC game wasn’t televised on any of the major networks.

Pepi wasn’t exactly a menacing presence out there …….he needs to get his FC Dallas Mojo back A.S.A.P
Seems pretty clear his teammates aren’t used to playing with him yet. In couple of those highlights players ignore Pepsi’s runs to make harder plays. There was an all touches video on Twitter but it looks like it got yanked off for copyright violations. Had 7.3 Fotmob score so it’s doubtful he was poor. A big part of his FCD success was Ferreira playing him into good spots we’ll see if he has that at Groningen or can create it on his own.
I’m not sure of the exact # of games ESPN+ has each week but usually if you aren’t playing Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord or AZ you aren’t on in the US. So just by luck you should get at least one of Basset (Fortuna) Booth (Utrecht), or Pepi. None were on this week and Booth and Bassett stayed on the bench anyway. Hopefully Ledezma gets some more consistent minutes at PSV.
