Bryan Reynolds has been rewarded with increased playing time this September with Belgian club Westerlo and the AS Roma loanee celebrated his first goal for the club on Saturday in a winning effort for the team.

Reynolds scored the opening goal on Saturday as Westerlo defeated Sporting Charleroi 3-2 away from home. It was the 21-year-old’s second-career goal in Europe and his first since April 10th while still on loan with Kortrijk. Not only did Reynolds score the opening goal in Saturday’s win, he also won two duels, made two interceptions, and three clearances as Westerlo tied Sporting Charleroi on 12 points apiece this season. The U.S. men’s national team fullback has started in each of the last three matches for Westerlo and will be pushing to remain in Jonas De Roeck’s starting lineup following the two-week international break.

In Germany, Jordan Pefok scored his fourth goal of the season in all competitions for Union Berlin while Gio Reyna logged over 50 minutes for Borussia Dortmund.

In England, Zack Steffen and Ethan Horvath both registered shutouts for their respective clubs. Tim Ream logged 90 minutes in Fulham’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

In Italy, Weston McKennie played 90 minutes for Juventus, but the Old Lady suffered a humiliating defeat to Monza.

In Spain, Yunus Musah missed Valencia’s 3-0 win over Celta Vigo through injury.

Elsewhere, Ricardo Pepi marked his first start for Eredivisie side FC Groningen by scoring his first goal for the club. Mark McKenzie and Sam Vines both impressed in Belgian Pro League victories, while Ian Harkes played 90 minutes in Dundee United’s 2-1 SPFL loss to Rangers. 1. Pefok’s goal was a very nice header off a cross, and he almost had a second on a one time shot earlier in the game. The guy is our most polished finisher, and I thought he looked good holding the ball up in this game also. Have to think he is world cup bound at this point. I get he doesn’t press and possible communication issues if his english isn’t great, but if he keeps playing the way he is and is left off entirely, I will have a problem with the decision. Having a system is great for a general framework and basic game plan, but sometimes you just need to get the best players on the field together.

    • 2tone – If you discount the injuries (Weah, Musah, CCV, Jedi) the # of players seeing significant minutes is still pretty impressive. Yes, some of our key players are still struggling for minutes (Pulisic, Luca DLT, Turner, & Richards) but significantly more of our important players are actually starting, seeing significant minutes, and contributing. When you factor in how young most of the US Players Abroad are we have made major strides over the failed 2018 team. I expect the #’s and minutes to significantly increase next cycle as our guys mature and grow into their talent.
It’s why I hope USSF has learned from past mistakes and does not extend Gregg’s contract beyond this cycle.

  2. John Brooks made his 1st appearance for Benfica. Coming in 89′. He’s not starting because Otamendi and the other guy are ahead of him on the depth chart.

    • They’ve got three CBs hurt right now that could move ahead of Brooks too. Morato 21 yr old Brazilian started earlier, expected back in Oct., another Brazilian Joao Victor who they spent 10 million on his return isn’t listed on transfermkt and Verrisimo but he’s got a torn ligament in his knee that occurred last November so return could be coming soon.

  3. Looks like Carter-Vickers and Richards are sidelined with injuries. Big opportunity for McKenzie and Palmer Brown. Both have had really good starts to the season.

Good to see Reynolds starting to flourish again. Will be a good bet for the Olympic team.

    • U23 teams often have release issues because it’s not FIFA calendar. even for a summer tournament. in terms of calling europeans, the paris olympics will be in july-august, not in the june holiday period like U20 regional qualifying or the world U20 tournament are.
