Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Turner, Steffen, and more

Matt Turner earned his first competitive start at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday and the U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper walked away with his first shutout and his second UEFA Europa League victory.

Turner made three saves for Mikel Arteta’s squad in a 3-0 win over Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, giving Arsenal its second group stage win of the competition. The former New England Revolution homegrown returned in between the posts for cup play and was up to the tasks in front of the Arsenal faithful. Turner’s best save came in the 56th minute as he dove to his right to deny Amahl Pellegrino from finding the bottom-right corner.

Ulrik Saltnes was also denied by Turner’s efforts in the 92nd minute as the 28-year-old held on for his first shutout in London. Turner will now prepare for his third UEL start next week as Arsenal visits Bodo/Glimt on Matchday 4.

Elsewhere in Europe, Sergino Dest made his first AC Milan start in a 3-0 loss at Chelsea. Josh Cohen made four saves in Maccabi Haifa’s 3-1 loss to Juventus. Weston McKennie played 90 minutes for Juventus.

In England, Zack Steffen earned his first Middlesbrough victory in a 1-0 win over Birmingham City. Josh Sargent assisted once in Norwich City’s 1-1 draw with Reading. Ethan Horvath and Luton Town tied Huddersfield Town 3-3 at home.
