Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Robinson, Reyna, and more

Antonee Robinson has jumped right back into his starting left back role for Fulham and helped the London club make it back-to-back victories for the first time in the English Premier League this season.

Robinson played 90 minutes in Fulham’s 3-2 road win over Leeds United on Sunday, helping Marco Silva’s squad move up to seventh place in the league table. The 25-year-old made four interceptions, won six of his eight duels, and completed one dribble as Fulham avoided a late draw at Elland Road. Robinson continued to pair with fellow U.S. men’s national team defender Tim Ream on the left side of Fulham’s backline, helping Fulham claim its first head-to-head victory over Leeds United since December 2019.

Up next for Fulham is a home date with Everton on Oct. 29 before facing Manchester United and Manchester United ahead of the FIFA World Cup break.

In Germany, Gio Reyna scored his first Borussia Dortmund goal since August 2021 in a lopsided win over Stuttgart.

In Italy, Weston McKennie netted his first Serie A goal of the new season. Sergino Dest played 45 minutes for AC Milan.

  1. I think with this weekend marks the end of Chris Richards diminished hopes of going to Qatar. One cannot be game ready fir that type of intensity after so many weeks away from training. On a positive side, the possible CB replacements are getting lots of playing time.

One cannot also help but notice lately how well Pepi is playing in all facets of the game. This weekend’s goal was a tap-in, but he has shown how well he can move to support the attack, and has really improved with integrating himself into the team. This was the right place for a loan.

The key piece with Reyna is he started and played for over 60 minutes, which shows improved match fitness.

The jockeying for 3rd GK is getting interesting. Johnson stood out for NYCFC in the playoffs, while Horvath isn’t really elevating his game right now.

    • I re4ally hope that EPB gets proper consideration. I’ve been a fan since a youth WC (probably U-19) a number of years ago. At the time, all the talk of the US defenders was CCV because of his connection to Tottenham, but I thought Palmer Brown was better and our best defender. It has usually taken him a while to move into the starting lineup at his various stops, but he has steadily moved up and elsewhere it mentioned that he is now the team captain on his French team. Berhalter gives him little time, though and I think EPB needs to be more strongly considered.

      Reply
      • Assuming we bring 4, the first three are Zimmerman, Long and CCV. That leaves EPB, McKenzie and unsure who else to consider. Not sure which is the better option head to head.

The glass half-full thought process is that with M Robinson and Richards out with injuries is that we at least have some viable options…

    • i feel like johnson should be the 2 on consistency and then the 3 should be someone new. failing that — and i don’t see us rolling the dice — 3 should be steffen vs horvath. if we went by club plus NT games and not hype, johnson is just consistently on his game, and horvath is a mess. horvath should be competing with other messes. one of my beefs with the club snobbery is your club address shouldn’t be offsetting being bad too many nights. this should be earned.

  2. Dang RB is getting even deeper for the 2026 cycle with Marlon Fossey starting to to come back strong. Both Fossey and Reynolds playing really good in Belgium.

Will be interesting to see if US soccer make a hard recruiting pitch at Balugon after the 2022 WC.

    Reply
    • It can be fun to speculate but a lot will depend on who our manager is post WC 2022. In truth the depth at RB may be too much for Fossey to break into. Dest (21) and Scally (19) are the 2 leading candidates for next cycle. Then there are a host of other RB options in Cannon (23), Moore (25), Reynolds (21) who’ve already represented the USMNT Sr. Team to challenge the leaders. Fossey @ 23 has some ground to make up. Not saying he can’t do it, but he’ll need to really step up his game (especially if Gregg is still the coach).
The task may get easier if our next manager goes to a 3 back system. I could see Reynolds be deployed as a RCB as he’s got the size & quickness to cover in space while being technical enough to pass out of the back. That would also allow Dest more freedom to get into the attack w/ less defensive duties. We may have to sit some very good players, but a 3-4-3 could be very interesting to see:
      ——–Pulisic———TBD———–Reyna———
      Jedi———Adams———-Musah———-Dest
      ——-TBD————Richards———TBD———
      CF: Sargent, Pepi, etc….
      LCB: Trusty, McKenzie, Pierie
RCB: M. Robinson, CCV, EPB, Reynolds, Che
      Bench: McKennie, Weah, Aaronson, Mighten,
(CB spots are going to be up for grabs regardless of who the Manager is, so need to cast a wide net and try out multiple players).

  3. Leeds are in desperate need of decent strikers AND NEED TO DESPERATELY SCOUT AND SPEND. What they have is barely enough to stay up in the EPL. From the looks of it Leeds need a couple of good strikers, forwards that can create, finish chances and make something happen out of nothing. Jesse Marsh needs to look for a diamond in the rough (like Klopp always does) from slightly lower leagues that have a track record of putting in the hard work, kinda like Harrison, Aaronson and Adams etc.

The have to be ready to access and scout for players during the world cup, look for strikers in leagues like French Ligue 1, Dutch Eredivisie, Portuguese Liga, Liga MX, Brasileiro Série A, Russian Premier Liga, English League Championship, MLS etc. and also be ready to sign / make immediate offers. As time goes on its becoming crystal clear that Rodigo, Bamford etc just can’t be counted on as critical producers

    Reply
    • That’s where they looked this summer. Austria, Netherlands, Switzerland in addition to Rocca and Adams who were Big 5 backups. They also went after DeKetelaere in Belgium. There were rumors about a couple other players in MLS and Netherlands that didn’t push through. Typically teams in the relegation zone go with tried and tested vets so not sure what we’ll see from Leeds. I’m not sure Jesse makes it to January or even Tuesday.
      —————
Not sure what you meant but they can’t sign anyone immediately, at least nothing official that can start before the transfer window in January. Ollie Ward is a good follow on YouTube for Leeds news from the fans perspective.

      • “Not sure what you meant…..”
Leeds need to have done their home work (scouting WC players and lesser leagues) and be ready to sign / make immediate offers given the first available opportunity…….which is the January window. For teams without a big budget quality selections are slim…..quality strikers even slimmer!

      • I’m sure they already have that list it’s just a question if those guys want to go to Leeds. I think perhaps that hurts Marsch, he needs a certain type of striker and a type of CB whose profiles are not indifferent from Berhalter’s. He can’t just go get Pefok or Brooks because they don’t fit. The board may very well decide they need a new manager but if they don’t realize they need to spend it’s not going to make a long term difference. Teemu Pukki actually wouldn’t be bad for Leeds, they just need a guy who can finish.

      • I don’t think Marsh’s job is in jeopardy…..yet. He just needs to push and use available recourses to get a striker (Pukki is EFL caliber, especially with his age). A lot of sports announcers were complimenting Leeds on their finding of Aaronson and Adams (cost vs team contribution), giving their performance this early in the season. There are “others” like them…..so if they have a list, they need to ramp up serious negotiations ASAP.

      • Hmmm …..maybe because of the adaptive ability, versatility, tenacity and relentless work ethic of JOSH SARGENT, maybe Leeds can trade Patrick Bamford (a striker proven to do well in the EFL) for Josh Sargent…..speaking of Pukki as he is a poster child of Norwich, he needs to stay and help Norwich lol

      • Pukki would be a more likely target for Leeds at this point. When in relagation zone teams go for proven entities. Teemu has 22 EPL goals Josh has 2. Leeds just needs a poacher to knock in all those balls that Aaronson and Harrison are putting into the box. It would probably be a good deal for Norwich because it might make both teams better. I do agree I don’t think Norwich would move him.
        —————————
Jesse seems safe for at least another week but now he needs a result at Anfield. He won’t last through the WC break if he doesn’t get at least 3 pts in these next 3. Liv, Bournemouth, Spurs. I’m not sure a win over Wolves in League Cup will help but it could hurt.

      • “Pukki would be a more likely target for Leeds at this point. When in relagation zone teams go for proven entities. Teemu has 22 EPL goals Josh has 2. ”
lol…….why would Leeds place a bet on Pukki , a 32 year old poucher…..when Norwich got relegated with Pukki at the helm of their attack. Also, saying Teemu has 22 EPL goals Josh has 2 so Pukki should be a better option, is like saying Altidore has 42 National team goals and Ferreira only has 7…..so Altidore should be a better haha
Sargent is younger, faster, more versatile….and currently one of the top players in the English Championship league. Just food for thought

        https://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/7/Seasons/9141/Stages/21050/PlayerStatistics/England-Championship-2022-2023

      • Sorry Bizzy saying what they’d be more likely to do not necessarily what they should do. Leeds has a lot better parts than Norwich both Harrison and Aaronson near the top in the EPL in chances created in the box. Bamford and Gelhardt can’t finish them. They just need a poacher to knock them in. A veteran like Pukki that can do that is less risk to an organization than Josh whose only shown he can do that in the last month and a half. If they’d gotten Taty Castellanos (who was rumored) they’d probably be in a lot better shape. If Jozy had scored 11g in MLS this year I’d probably advocate for him to go to Qatar to be honest!

  4. All of this I agree, we’ll see. Can they find those players who want to come?

Aaronson was wonderful today diming teammates right and left and darting around everywhere

Adams was in the form of his career even with Leeds’ struggles defensively. He has not been the problem tho some wonder aloud why he hasn’t solved Leeds’ d issues.

But I think the issue is more about finishing chances for this team

    Reply
      • Yes sir, I gotcha +1 Also Marsh should try putting Aaronson and Rodrigo up top and Sinisterra as a CAM that would be interesting to see.

    • The defense wasn’t even that bad today from the run of play, they just couldn’t defend set pieces. Not sure how anyone thought trading one good DM in Kalvin Phillips for Adams was going to change anything, they still had a suspect CB pairing.
      ———————————
As for finishing they probably swung too big trying to get DeKetelaire and missed on Gakpo settling on Sinisterra. Perhaps time to unleash Gnonto even if he’s just teenager with Swiss League experience. He did score against Germany in Nations League.

      Reply
      • Not sure, he’s pretty small so I think he’d have to play as a SS or wing. They’d have to shift some people around like who do you drop Aaronson, Harrison or Sinisterra? I’ve never seen him play so I don’t know if he’d help or not.

  5. Hopefully Adams injury isn’t serious, but if it is you just drop both Musah and McKennie to protect that back line and utilize Reyna or Aaronson as a 10 in a 4–2-3-1 formation.

    Reply
  6. Not good Adams is injured. I hope the muscular strain is not serious. I am let down that Leeds is struggling I am hoping they can turn it around. Like people say get a couple more defenders and attackers who are not injury prone like Bamford in Jan 2023 transfer window.
