FC Groningen earned its best victory of the 2022-23 Eredivisie season to date with Ricardo Pepi amongst the goals once again for Frank Vormuth’s side.
Pepi scored his fifth league goal and sixth overall in all competitions as Groningen defeated PSV 4-2 at home. It was FC Groningen’s first head-to-head victory over the Dutch giants since 2014 and one that moved them out of the relegation zone.
The 19-year-old Pepi took advantage of a defensive error by PSV in its own half of the field. Cyril Ngonge’s breakaway attempt was saved by Walter Benitez in the 39th minute, but Pepi slotted home the rebound for the opening goal of the match.
It was his fourth goal in his past four appearances following the September international break.
Radinio Balker and Cyril Ngonge both added goals of their own in a three-minute span to close the first half, but PSV pulled a goal back through Ibrahim Sangare’s headed finish. Guus Til cut the PSV deficit to 3-2 before FC Groningen but the hosts would have the final say as Joey Pelupessy iced the victory in the 92nd minute.
Pepi finished the match with 90 minutes played, two chances created, two duels won, and a 90% passing rate.
FC Groningen next travels to FC Emmen on Oct. 30 before final first-half matches against FC Utrecht and Fortuna Sittard.
Keep it going young man! An in form Pepi for the WC is awesome!
Damn, Ricardo Pepi and co. just slapped the second place team in the Eredivisie . Absolutely awsome game……
Looks like Van Nistelroy needs to rotate players more with all these 2 game weeks. #letrichieplay
