AC Milan’s quest of lifting the Coppa Italia this season came to an end on Wednesday, but Sergino Dest walked away as one of the major bright spots for the Serie A side in the defeat.
Dest played 111 minutes as a left wing back in AC Milan’s 1-0 extra time loss to Torino, impressing in his first competitive start for the Italian giants since October. The Barcelona loanee won six of his 11 duels, drew a match-high three fouls, and made two tackles before being substituted off prior to the Torino game-winning goal. Dest has mainly featured off the bench in recent weeks for AC Milan, but his strong outing at the San Siro will have Stefano Pioli confident of playing him during the upcoming schedule.
AC Milan returns to Serie A play on Saturday at Lecce before squaring off with local rivals Inter Milan in the Italian Supercoppa on Jan. 18.
In England, Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson led Fulham to a 2-1 West London derby win over Chelsea at Craven Cottage. The victory moves Marco Silva’s squad up to sixth place in the English Premier League table.
In Spain, Yunus Musah started for Valencia, but could not help Gennaro Gattuso’s squad defeat Real Madrid in Supercopa De Espana action.
In Belgium, Mark McKenzie and league-leaders Genk suffered elimination from the Belgian Cup.
In the Netherlands, Taylor Booth and FC Utrecht advanced in the KNVB Cup while Ricardo Pepi and FC Groningen were eliminated.
