Alex Zendejas had been enjoying another impressive season for Liga MX side Club America, but the American talent will now be worried about his immediate future following an early exit in Saturday’s match.

Zendejas was carted off of Club America’s 2-2 draw with Santos Laguna on Saturday with an apparent hamstring injury. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder left the field in the 19th minute after trying to stop a Santos Laguna counter attack.

Zendejas was tracking back to stop Santos Laguna was racing towards goal before he fell to the ground grabbing the back of his leg. He was replaced by Brian Rodriguez prior to Santos Laguna scoring two goals in an 18-minute span before halftime.

Club America would use goals from Henry Martin and Roger Martinez to earn a 2-2 draw, but manager Fernando Ortiz will be worrying about Zendejas’ status moving forward. The 24-year-old had scored one goal and added one assist in five Clausura matches this winter before making his USMNT senior debut in a 2-1 friendly loss to Serbia in January.

Zendejas has scored 13 goals and added three assists in 42 appearances for Club America to date. His timetable to return is unknown as Club America tries to improve from a 1-4-0 start to the Clausura season.

Club America hosts Necaxa next on Feb. 11 before visiting Atletico San Luis, hosting Club Tijuana, and visiting Atlas later this month.

  1. Did anyone happen to see the match? I had some soda & nachos ready to watch Santos v America. Zendejas getting injured was disappointing to the US fan in me, however it was a gritty competitive match! I also watched the Pachuca match earlier in the day. The LB Isais is a player to keep an eye on. Chofis of Pachuca body type and play style reminds me of Diego Luna. When that youngster from Pachuca gets an opportunity with the senior squad for El Tri, look out!

  2. Really not happy about this.

I really, really liked this guy, and he’s up there with Balogun on my “dual-nats who would make a monster impact to the pool” list.

Here’s hoping he heals up. Quickly. And decides he’s American. We do not have another guy like him in the pool and he’d help us a ton, and I think he rotates with Pulisic and Weah as co-starters from the moment he arrives, which would take a ton of pressure off both guys and give us a huge ability to break down a low block.
