It had been over four months since Jordan Pefok celebrated a goal for Union Berlin, but after getting a late cameo against Mainz on Saturday, the American striker walked away the hero for Urs Fischer’s squad.
Pefok came off the bench and delivered the winning goal as Union Berlin defeated Mainz 2-1 at home. It was Pefok’s first goal for the Bundesliga club since Sept. 18 as Union Berlin moved to top of the league standings.
Kevin Behrens’ first-half goal was cancelled out by Marcus Ingvartsen’s penalty kick finish in the second half, forcing Fischer to go to his bench for a late spark. Pefok came on in the 80th minute and needed only four minutes to spring Union Berlin in front for good.
Morten Thorsby’s headed pass to Pefok was roofed into the top-left corner by the substitute, giving Union Berlin a late 2-1 victory. Pefok won three duels, completed one tackle, and scored with his only shot in the match, giving the U.S. men’s national team forward a major spark in 2023.
Pefok now has four goals and three assists in Bundesliga play this season, his debut Bundesliga campaign.
Union Berlin next travels to RB Leipzig on Feb. 11 before visiting Ajax in its Europa League Round of 32 first leg showdown.
Is this Pefok 4th goal of the season? Hey his good in the box, you gotta give him that. Hopefully he can find the net 6 more times for the rest of the season. Be nice if we can get some americans into double digit goals for a season
oh dear god. people want to start sargent off 5 G a season same league. zero analytic consistency whatsoever.
Nice goal, and a game-winner to boot. Union is having a great season.
