Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Turner, Carter-Vickers, and more

Arsenal earned a favorable result in its UEFA Europa League Round of 16 first leg showdown in Lisbon with Matt Turner contributing heavily in the Gunners result.

Turner made four saves for Mikel Arteta’s squad in a 2-2 draw with Sporting Lisbon, giving the English Premier League leaders an edge as they return to the Emirates Stadium for next week’s second leg. The U.S. men’s national team shot-stopper was called into action twice from long-range, repelling Gonzalo Inacio and Marcus Edwards from finding the back of the net. Although Turner will feel he could’ve done more on Paulinho’s rebound goal, the 27-year-old certainly played his part in the result.

Arsenal will travel to Fulham in a London Derby on Sunday before hosting Sporting Lisbon in the second leg on March 16.

Elsewhere in Europe, Gio Reyna logged 85 minutes off the bench for Borussia Dortmund but Christian Pulisic and Chelsea had the last laugh by advancing in the UCL.

In Scotland, Cameron Carter-Vickers helped Celtic come from behind to defeat Hearts in SPFL play. Malik Tillman did not dress for Rangers in a comeback win over Hibernian.
