The Hollywood lights shone bright in Wrexham, Wales on Saturday as the National League club achieved its goals of returning to the Football League.
Wrexham clinched automatic promotion back to League Two on Saturday following a 3-1 comeback victory over Boreham Wood at the Racecourse Stadium. The Welsh club, which is owned by American and Canadian actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, will play League Two Football next season for the first time in 15 years.
Boreham Wood struck first through Lee Ndlovu’s first minute opener, but Wrexham would claw its way back in the first half before flipping momentum after halftime. Elliot Lee’s equalizer came in the 15th minute before Paul Mullin scored twice in a 19-minute span to make it 3-1 midway through the second half.
Mullin’s 38 league goals rank as the second-most in the National League, three behind Notts County’s Macaulay Langstaff. Despite Notts County’s 5-2 road win over Maidstone earlier in the day, Wrexham clinched the lone automatic promotion spot with one match to spare.
Wrexham had not only enjoyed a strong National League campaign, but the Welsh club also reached the fourth round of the FA Cup this past January. Phil Parkinson’s squad have only lost three times in league play this season, while claiming 34 victories in 45 matches.
Reynolds and McElhenney purchased Wrexham in November 2020 and were approved as new owners in February 2021. Fellow American actor Paul Rudd was seen watching Saturday’s match at the Racecourse Stadium with Reynolds and McElhenney.
Wrexham is scheduled to tour the United States this summer, facing off with Chelsea in Charlotte on July 19 and Manchester United in San Diego on July 25.
