Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Reyna, Green, and more

Borussia Dortmund’s quest to lift the Bundesliga title ended on Saturday against Mainz, but Gio Reyna walked away as one of the top performers in the season finale.

Reyna came off the bench and registered two assists in Dortmund’s 2-2 home draw with Mainz, a result that wasn’t good enough to edge Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title. The 20-year-old did not start for Edin Terzic’s squad at Signal Iduna Park but ended his campaign on a high note.

With Dortmund needing a fight back to have any chance at earning the title, Reyna made a quick impact after coming onto the pitch. His one-two passing with Raphael Guerreiro allowed the Portuguese fullback the opportunity to slot home in the 69th minute for a 2-1 scoreline. Reyna made another positive impression in the final moments of the match, setting up Niklas Sule for a 2-2 equalizer in the 96th minute. However, a 2-2 scoreline wasn’t good enough for Dortmund as they finished runners-up in the league title race.

Reyna finished the season with seven goals and four assists in 30 combined appearances. He will now prepare for potential U.S. men’s national team involvement this June for the Concacaf Nations League Final Four.

In England, Ethan Horvath helped lead Luton Town back into the English Premier League for the first time since 1996.

In Germany, Gio Reyna assisted twice in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-2 finale draw with Mainz. John Brooks went the distance in Hoffenheim’s 1-1 draw with Stuttgart. Julian Green scored in Greuther Furth’s league finale victory over Darmstadt.

In France, Erik Palmer-Brown and Folarin Balogun both played 90 minutes apiece in Ligue 1 action. Tim Weah started in Lille’s 2-1 victory.

Elsewhere, Bryan Reynolds and Reggie Cannon each played 90 minutes apiece in league play. Matthew Hoppe did not feature in his final match with Hibernian. Ian Harkes and Dundee United suffered relegation from the Scottish Premiership following their fifth-straight loss. Ricardo Pepi‘s FC Groningen loan ended Sunday following a 5-0 loss to Sparta Rotterdam.

  1. Klinsmann took Green to lock him into the US instead of LD

that decision has aged like the shriveling prune decision it was

    • As long as JK was the manager, Landon wasn’t going to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup.

Green had little if anything to do with it.
