Leeds United heads into Premier League finale in relegation zone

Leeds United’s time in the English Premier League looks to be coming to an end with the Yorkshire club needing a victory on Matchday 38 to have any chance of avoiding a drop to England’s second-tier.

Sam Allardyce’s squad scored first in Sunday’s trip to West Ham United, but eventually conceded twice in a 2-1 loss to the Hammers at the London Stadium. Weston McKennie logged 90 minutes and one assist for Leeds United while Brenden Aaronson played 28 minutes off the bench.

McKennie helped set up Rodrigo’s opening goal for the Lilywhites in the 17th minute, delivering a long throw-in that the Spaniard slotted home. It was McKennie’s first assist for the club during the Premier League season.

However, West Ham would battle back as Jarrod Bowen’s clever dribbling led to his cross towards the back post in the 31st minute. West Ham captain Declan Rice volleyed home the pass for a 1-1 equalizer.

Bowen’s flicked finish in the 72nd minute boosted David Moyes’ squad in front at 2-1 before Manuel Lanzini came off the bench and delivered the final blow in stoppage time for a 3-1 result. Leeds United has now conceded 74 league goals in 2022-23 and 153 goals over the last two seasons, the most by any club in Europe’s top-five leagues over that span.

Leeds United will head into the final weekend in the bottom three, with only them, Everton, and Leicester City fighting for the final safety spot.

Leicester City travels to Newcastle United on Monday before hosting West Ham United on May 28. Everton hosts Bournemouth on May 28 while Leeds United hosts Tottenham at Elland Road.

The Lilywhites will need to win to have any chance of avoiding Premier League relegation this season.

  1. Leeds fans deserve what they asked for. Screw them.

Aaronson in the Championship? it’s even more physically brutal there. He should go to Italy or Spain, like I said from the start. I knew the EPhake L would punish him physically, and as an American, he’d get no protection from the absolutely terribly biased english refs (they universally suck and massage everything, you know, cheat).

Not a difficult call, one of the easier ones over the decades 🙂

  2. It’s Patrick Bumford fault they in reelegation zone. He missed the penalty last weekend and they tied against Newcastle United instead of winning 🤦‍♂️

    • could literally go thru every game and point out his scuffs and misses. the last game Marsch coached, he had THREE

feel for the guy but wow, he’s struggled

  3. To be honest Leeds has been done and dusted since firing Marsch. Also I just don’t really care if Leeds goes down. Adams will have suitors, and Brendan might not be a premier league level talent right now. Might do him so good to play in the Championship a la Sargent.
