Gio Reyna has yet to take the field for Borussia Dortmund during preseason camp, but manager Edin Terzic is hoping to have him back in action soon.
Terzic confirmed on Wednesday that Reyna is one of five players not fit this summer after suffering a calf injury in June’s Concacaf Nations League schedule. Reyna missed Dortmund’s 7-0 preseason-opening win over fifth-tier Westfalia Rhynern on Wednesday, as did Karim Adeyemi, Felix Nmecha, and Youssoufa Moukoko.
Reyna suffered his injury in the USMNT’s 2-0 CNL Final victory over Canada, despite him registering two assists before being replaced at halftime. The 20-year-old has had several injury problems at Dortmund over the last three seasons and could be a worry as the Black and Yellow prepare for another go at a Bundesliga title.
“Five players are not yet completely fit,” Terzic said Wednesday. “The aforementioned trio are joined by Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Gio Reyna, who unfortunately got injured with their national teams.
“The lads are on a good path,” he added. “Four of them will be on the training pitch tomorrow and then we hope to have them all fit by the end of pre-season at the latest. In Karim, Youssoufa and Felix’s case, we hope that they will already be able to participate fully in team training next week.”
Reyna enjoyed a positive season in 2022-23, scoring seven goals and registered four assists in 30 combined appearances. Despite Reyna’s two-assist performance, Borussia Dortmund fell in the Bundesliga title race on the final day of the season in a 2-2 draw with Mainz.
He has earned 17 caps with the USMNT to date, scoring four goals.
Borussia Dortmund continues its preparation for its U.S. summer tour which features friendlies against Manchester United, Chelsea, and USL Championship side San Diego Loyal.
