SBI USMNT Man of the Match: Jesus Ferreira

Jesus Ferreira continued his hot run of form in front of goal on Sunday in the U.S. men’s national team’s 6-0 romp over Trinidad & Tobago.

Ferreira became the first USMNT player to registered back-to-back hat tricks after scoring three goals in the first half at Bank of America Stadium. The FC Dallas product also scored three goals in Wednesday’s Group A win over Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Ferreira needed only 14 minutes to break the deadlock in Charlotte, fighting for room in the box before slotting past Marvin Phillip for a 1-0 USMNT advantage.

The 22-year-old doubled the USMNT’s lead in the 38th minute, drilling a left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner.

Ferreira capped off his impressive first half in the third minute of first-half stoppage time, scoring from the penalty spot after Djordje Mihailovic was fouled in the box by Alvin Jones.

The USMNT added second-half goals from Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio, and Brandon Vazquez to cap off a 6-0 victory. Ferreira created the most chances by any player (5), while also registering four shots on target.

Ferreira edged out Busio, Bryan Reynolds, and Jalen Neal for Man of the Match honors.

What did you think of Ferreira’s latest performance? Do you see him continuing to rack up the goals in the knockout stage?

  1. OH MY GOD! Stop drinking the kool aid and put the bubbly away! Jesus deserves to be in the conversation for the top 23 but it isn’t a sure thing. He has scored 6 goals against some of the weakest opposition in the world. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. If he was that good he would be in Europe playing week in week out. Most of our top talent can’t even get regular shifts weekly in Europe. JF belongs in MLS and will come into B National teams and play Concacaf minnows and look like a man against children. He likely will never be much more than that.

  2. On the striker depth chart Ferreira right now is my #3 behind Balogun and Pepi. His goal scoring form speaks for itself.

  3. Not saying Ferreira is anywhere near the player but Mikail Antonio had no goals against Trinidad or St. Kitts. So yes the competition, but you’ve still got to put it in the net.

  4. Well, I’m bummed. Not long after the first goal, AT&T Universal lost signal for the rest of the game. One thing I did notice is that Zendejas so wants to score a goal, that he is being very selfish and making poor decisions.

  5. I’m interested to see who Callaghan replaces Sonora, and Jordan Morris with. Does A team players get called up to the knock out rounds?

    • No A team will not come in. According to IV they have to have a document from the medical team that says they will not be available for two weeks. It pretty much has to be guys in season so they are fit and most preseason club camps are opening later this week. MF possibilities Ledezma (could also play W), Parks and Yueill probably it. Pomykal, T Tillman and Acosta all just back from injury so still unlikely. Forwards, Arriola is still hurt so likely your choice is Tyler Boyd or Ebobisse, with an outside shout to Brooks Lennon who could play W but he’s a right sided player and we need LWs.

    • Keaton Parks (A Morris left camp for personal reasons or if A Long is injured) , Tim Tillman (Sonora), Pefok (J Mo). If it’s between Parks & Tillman, I’d go with Parks. Djordje, Sands, Jesus are the starting trio in a 4-3-3. Tillman, Parks, Roldan are the backups. Busio isn’t a LW but needs to play one this squad, going back 2 his U17 days. Busio, Vasquez, Zendejas
are your front 3. Cowell, Pefok, Gressel are the backups. Miles, Miazga, Neal rotating is good. Fullbacks & GKs have good quality minutes during group stage. 3 knockout matches to go!

      • Or we could bump Jesus to the Christian Pulisic role at left wing forward. Jordan Morris’s injury replacement will almost certainly be MLS…which means it’ll probably be Nicholas Gioacchini or Bobby Wood. I could live with either guy; Gioacchini showed some promise last Gold Cup and Wood’s always been a pretty durn good player when he was healthy. (Which he is at the moment. I think. What day is it? Monday?)

Agree with Parks or Timothy Tillman; those guys both would be solid replacements. Is Tillman healthy again? We may actually need both since Sonora picked up a knock as well.

      • Coach Q – 2tone asked a question, I’ve been looking and figured I had answers to the test!! Btw, Nico & Wood aren’t on the preliminary roster. You gotta check the GC 60 man SBI article and give your thoughts to comment board in the near future. If I’m not mistaken, I think it was a guy by the name of Larry, who wrote it. #ShamelessPlug’23

      • Forgot about having to pull from that 60-man roster rule…bummer, those guys are both in pretty good form. Gotta think it’ll be Ebobisse then for Morris, which I’d have probably done from the start anyway since Morris was apparently gimping well before the Gold Cup ever started.

Regardless, our pool is definitely deeper than I have ever seen it before. I can’t even imagine what it might look like for the 2028 cycle.

Do you have any insight into what led Aidan Morris to leave camp? His first game was hot-and-cold but he did show some quality, enough that I definitely see him in Europe in the not-too-distant future.

      • Q: Wilfred Nancy had no other information at his press conference today on Aidan. Aidan doesn’t have an active public Twitter, so we’ll see if US gives any further info at their next media availability. Not sure on their travel schedule if they are staying in Charlotte a few days or if they are going directly too Cincinnati.

    • article i read said it’s sonora who’s “done” with hammy issues and they will try to replace him. also said aidan morris is gone for “personal reasons” — anything to do with canada??? (i mean dude they are broke) — and doesn’t mention a replacement.

didn’t mention jordan morris. they may be playing for time because zendejas has underwhelmed but i’d want a healthy wing. we’ll see what happens. not sure when they have to do anything and we don’t play for almost a week.

      • Morris is cap-tied now. I’m not sure if you could replace him if it’s not an injury. IV didn’t you look up the rules on that. Given the week before the next match wouldn’t be surprised if these guys are all back.

    • since we’re around the point when euro teams on the traditional calendar hit camp my guess is the replacement is MLS. i wanna say when they used to do the upgrade swaps that was pre-NL and GC was played in june. players brought in now would potentially be here through mid july.

personally i don’t think we learn a thing bringing back A team. people knock my experimentation ideas but you see where a few weeks watching a prospect set and you get very definite opinions (abundant tape) on who can help and who is overrated.

  6. Keep on doing your thing Jesus. Keep on silencing the doubters. I think he would thrive in a two striker system in Europe.

      • Plenty of teams use a two striker system in Europe. 3-5-2 is routinely used for many teams. He isn’t a straight up midfielder. His goal scoring ability would say he is a forward. Yes he isn’t a traditional 9 but he definitely seems to be able to score goals. Top goal scorer this tournament and one of the top goal scorers in MLS the past two seasons. He has the ability to play many attacking positions. I have no doubt he will be in Europe soon.

      • 2tone,

“Plenty of teams use a two striker system in Europe. 3-5-2 is routinely used for many teams.”

        Teams like……….?

The best example that you might use is Spurs with Kane and Son. But those guys are two very exceptional players and I don’t think Jesus, however good he may be, resembles either one.

Jesus scores against Grenada (4) , St. Kitts (3) and TNT (3) , three high school level teams. You can only score against who you play so that ‘s not his fault but I’d like to see him against more convincing defenses. And he won’t see them at this Gold Cup. The one goal of his that was big time was his Mexico goal, a classic Dempsey goal.

“His goal scoring ability would say he is a forward.”

        Sure but at what level?

His physicality ( or lack therof) says otherwise.

Besides, in MLS he scores at a rate of goal every 2.95 games. I’ll round that off to a goal every 3 games.

That’s okay but a good attacking midfielder like Almiron, with a goal every 3.2 games when he was at Atlanta will do that.

Wondo, an all time great forward and the standard for American forwards, scored at a rate of a goal every 2.3 games.

I’d be very happy to have Jesus prove my evaluation of him wrong but I don’t know why you and quozzel are so worried about Jesus.

As one of Gregg’s guys, he’s already certain lock for the Copa America and the 2026 World Cup. For gods’ sake, Greg took Aaron Long and Roldan to Qatar for no apparent reason I can think of other than they were HIS guys.

And Jesus, with his eyes closed, is already far more useful than either of those two.

Meaning Gregg can pull that off with a lot less flak coming his way. Welcome to the USMNT.

And Gregg is certainly going to give Jesus every chance to get even better
just like Bob did for Michael. That’s how he became MB90.

        Jesus is the new JF90.

        As they say:

        “Meet the new boss
        Same as the old boss”

    • Ferreira is not better than Pepi. Beerholder made wrong descision choosing him over Pepi. That Holland game showed me enough dude is a whole catfish(Look diffrent online than when meeting in person 😂 . When he score against Brazil, England, Italy or France like Clint Dempsey then I will shut up.

    • Ferreira sure turns into Messi when playing against minnow Caribbean countries. Wish someone would have hypnotized him and told him that the Netherlands was a minnow Caribbean country.
