USMNT routs Trinidad & Tobago to top Group A of Gold Cup

Jesus Ferreira stole the show for the second-straight Concacaf Gold Cup match as the U.S. men’s national team topped Group A with a dominant performance vs. Trinidad & Tobago.

Ferreira led the way in a 6-0 romp over the Soca Warriors on Sunday, while Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio, and Brandon Vazquez also found the back of the net. It was A second-consecutive shutout victory for the Americans, who edged Jamaica to the top spot.

Ferreira broke the deadlock in the 14th minute by picking up where he left off in Wednesday’s win over Saint Kitts and Nevis. Alex Zendejas’ pass into the box was stroked home by Ferreira for a 1-0 USMNT lead after Marvin Phillip failed to clear his lines.

Ferreira doubled his tally and the USMNT’s lead in the 38th minute with a left-footed strike into the bottom-right corner. The FC Dallas forward capped his hat trick before half time, slotting home from the penalty spot after Djordje Mihailovic was fouled in the box by Alvin Jones.

Cade Cowell extended the USMNT’s lead to 4-0 in the 65th minute, taking advantage of an errant back pass before deking Phillip and slotting into an empty net.

The USMNT added two late goals to cap the final score at 6-0 with Gianluca Busio scoring his first international goal and Brandon Vazquez’s adding his second goal of the tournament.

Matt Turner registered three saves to preserve his first clean sheet of this summer’s Gold Cup.

The USMNT will face the runners-up of Group D in the quarterfinal round, slated for July 9 in Cincinnati.

  1. Something I’ve noticed in these double headers this summer is “dual national” fans. In Vegas in the final you saw Mexican-Americans staying to cheer on US. Last night they showed several groups of people wearing mixtures of US and Honduran gear at the start of US game. Good for the US game that people are cheering for US as well as the country of their heritage.

  2. I think Stu nailed it on Zendejas re. his shot affecting his touch confidence.

he’s snatching his shot, not staying over it, and that soccer moment is escaping him and rushed, instead of focused with belief. and now it’s affecting his touch confidence. who hasn’t been there?
imo, his next outing is his big opportunity tho, we’ll see. needs to settle in the group, regroup, and in a week, get after the first 15-20 minutes right from the opening whistle with rebuilt belief and the absolute most positive expression of himself that he has, from way deep inside there, aware of the moment that’s escaping him…and dominating it. he’s creating the looks

I hope he can do it. his touch will magically return too. his skills have been observable in the uniform before.

I really like BJ and hope maybe he can help him here. I think Zendejas will start, we’ll see

    • let me pose a question GB fanboys don’t want to hear. should he have been kept in a sub role a bit? or would he press too hard there too? i think zendejas’ fans ignored how his first match went. i also feel like the ethos around the team is a little too shiny new toy. like you go from new toy to starter 0-60. we need more position competitions and players slowly progressed into slightly bigger roles over time. we kind of want to jump to the end. but then i think we favor analytics over scouting where they see something in the numbers before they watch the player with the team. so we keep rushing debatable players straight into starting roles only to backpedal. maybe pace yourself and give a few competing players a similar chance then run with the one who excels and doesn’t freak out in the moment.

      • Not a lot of competition among MLS/LigaMx American wingers. As we’ve discussed I was surprised Nico wasn’t included but it’s done now. Gressell missed the first week with his wife having a baby so…

      • “should he have been kept in a sub role a bit? or would he press too hard there too?”

Doesn’t matter how you do it Start or sub, there’s value either way in terms of seeing how he reacts.

This is not an exact science.

Sometimes national teams don’t have the bandwidth to be patient, subtle and nuanced like a club team does. If the USMNT were a club, they would have Cup competitions top tryout their shiny new toys.

Sometimes you just have to throw them into the deep end and see how it goes.

Right now Zendejas has melted down and that is a very valuable thing to know. Maybe next time out he comes on as a sub and does better.

That’s a more realistic rehearsal as he’s not going to be an A team starter. There’s still time to find Zendejas’ best role for the USMNT..

      • who are the GB fanboys IV? name names

I can tell you who the anti-GB fanboys are, you know, the ones unable to give him the credit he EARNED

you know, not just a shiny new toy, like a new coach or new system 😉

        argue with Stu Holden man

  3. Man, that was a bad T&T team outside of Garcia, who was a man among kids. Sure some of our defenders have nightmares from him. Anyone catch that defender with the fat rolls? And the keeper was bad. Still some of our player showed poorly – Roldan was horrendous, Miazga was poor, Zendejas was lost and couldn’t retain possession, and Busio was lousy until the last 15 when T&T gave up. I’ve never gotten Busio – he actually plays smaller than he is, doesn’t ever get stuck in to tackles, and turns the ball over in a position that can’t turn it over.

Ferreira was good and his running off the ball and distribution opened thing up. But everyone doth protest too much in their defense of him. The commentators defeated their own arguments by bringing up past records scored against Cuba, Belize, Grenada etc. he needs to step up his game against hex teams first. Reynolds’s showed well as did Mihailovich and Sands. I’d have Cowell on my 23 for the WC as a 65-75 sub when goals and running are needed. He needs to go to Europe. Turner played well and the tests he got were pretty dangerous. Nice to see him directing traffic. I’ll have to see Neal again.

    • Between Covid shutdowns and Federation issues their league was shut down for several seasons. Their pasts “stars” have aged (Molino, Jones) and they haven’t been able to get young guys playing so they can audition for MLS, USL or lower English leagues. Garcia had a great year in Greece but hasn’t really hit big in Europe as he was hoped for when playing at AZ at 18.

    • i see it as like january camp extended. the important thing is showing you can handle the level and hopeful excel, as this is the easy version. it only gets harder from here.

there is some kvetching on the jesus article about he only does this on bad teams and fair enough. but this is kind of the first 3 hurdles when how you handle the later ones decides if you can win races. you can’t handle these you’re not a useful hurdler. my disappointment with jesus is more i don’t think he was given legit competition where he had to really win this job. i am not a fan of the thumb on scales approach where we kind of pick the winner before the contest. he gets to start every game. hmmm who are we trying to showcase. call up 2 serious strikers and share out the time and see if they have a TnT hat trick. he’s done this to TnT before. it’s not winning a competition or proof of concept at the level he needs to show it at.

anyhow to me it was turner jesus reynolds sands djordje. only a couple of those are news. i like gressel but they haven’t used him much. cowell might have clawed his way up.

the others, meh. zendejas has played his way out of regular status. vazquez has looked clunky. most of the mids and defense, pffft.

you do that sorting and then next step we figure out if jesus can do anything in a big game, if sands can handle marking and foot speed, can djordje set up like this on a tougher opponent. my whole argument on experimentation was you just rarely have an opportunity like this to trial players for weeks at a time. i personally think it’s a waste i am not seeing gaga or other keepers. that some of the old farts and regulars are taking up valuable space.

    • yeah, i wouldn’t take much away from that game other than note the players who had bad days against a poor opponent. one of my concerns with this regime is it seems to matter more than it should who gets a hat trick in this kind of game. wondo once had a hat trick on belize and 2 more on cuba one GC. twellman had a hat trick on norway in january, ditto kljestan on sweden in a january camp. the ability to sense context matters. i think this brain trust is obsessed with stats so they fetishize the numbers more so than the context and its limits. to me it’s does this work on a good team or not, particularly when qualifying doesn’t exist this time.

      • to be fair, i think this type game presents an entry level test. some pass and some fail. but this is like he’s in college already getting applauded for retaking the SAT and scoring well. he’s already done this to TnT before.

i actually like him but the whole thing is can he level up. and would he be more useful as a swiss army sub instead of a strict false 9. he needs more goals like the mexico one, and against first choice sides.

like i said, i would like to have seen about 3 strikers in camp handed roughly equal group round minutes winnowing down to who plays well as we progress. that’s setting aside we seem to have zero clue how to plan player use as a group for an opponent. we like reputation. we like numbers. we don’t seem to sense, like, this team is susceptible to crosses, and let’s put on some crossers and vazquez. or this team lets you pass, so maybe ferreira with some guys who can serve him. package deal. to me the 2 DM lineups look clunky.

      • I hear you, still knockout a different test and no more minus 14 goal differential opponents left either

      • i think if canada emerges that’s a rivalry game (like mexico) regardless who they have called. if the others get out — and canada may be weakened with the funding issues and hollowed roster — then i agree our next toughie is semi round. personally i think this line of talk is a tad arrogant as we might have been outplayed by jamaica (and got a tie) and have since had a couple creme puffs. and where the tactics supercharged the NL team this tournament we have at times deployed clunky 2 DM lineups with multiple useless players, which is driving with the parking brake on.

i mean, roldan at wing? that was a black hole most of the game. busio, same IMO. some of the defensive picks. i will wait and see who gets swapped. that may help some. but just saying it’s not like this bunch has owned every minute so far. jamaica was a grind we were lucky to get a point from.

      • Jamaica, yes, the other 2? come on IV

I am not arrogant re. CONCACAF games, ever

like road qualis, and who cares how it looks, just win, knowing the officiating is pathetic and our region corrupt AF

funny hearing you speak of arrogance 😉

      • IV: yes Canada will be up for it and Herdman will have some wrinkle, but the roster is composed of MLS journeyman and a few lower league Europeans. Throw in the spector of possible bankruptcy and federal investigations and the team has looked lost against Guatemala and Guadeloupe. Plus for some reason they’ll be on two days less rest.

  4. Very happy for Busio. It’s quite special to score your first USMNT goal in your “homecoming” game. (Busio grew up in Greensboro, NC, which is 90 miles up the interstate from Charlotte.). Big congrats Gianluca.

  5. Please stop discounting Cade Cowell. The way he takes people on like a Prime in form Clint Dempsey is awesome and Jogo Bonito. The kid is 19 and is way better than Zandejas. I have been to San Jose CA and have seen him play he is awesome to watch in person.

    • Sorry, still not sold. The 19 yr old from Jamaica kept him in check, the semi pro from St Kitts kept him in check. If not for a lazy pass he’d have nothing to show for the group stage. Like tonight he dribbled through the box around 3 or 4 defenders but nothing came of it while 3 wide open teammates stood there with their hands up. Right now he has one move go as fast as you can cut onto your right foot and hit it as hard as you can. He can be dangerous but he’s not consistent.

      Reply
      • Cade has been far better than Zendajas this tournament. Really even Roldan has been better this tournament and he was bad tonight.

      • I disagree. Cade is a competitor and his game has grown quite a bit since Luchi took over at San Jose. He put it two to three dangerous crosses from his left foot today. He had a goal an assist and another shot ring off if the post. He is direct, has the ability to beat multiple players on the dribble, his left foot is getting much better, and is adding vision to his game. Oh and he has what every great attacker possesses….. the ability to forget a bad attacking play and continue to attack the defense. He isn’t perfect and at only 19 he still has room to grow. His ceiling is extremely high. Regardless if he scored on a bad back pass… he still very quickly “mentally” recognized what that defender was going to do and he has the athletic speed to back up his quick thinking in that moment. I have watched seasoned USMNT attackers i.e, Dempsey, Donovan, Altidore, Beasley etc… struggle against inferior defenders.

      • Err…IMHO you’re being (somewhat deservedly) really hard on Zendejas. He’s been really erratic for sure – Sweet Baby Jesus, his finishing’s been bad – but he’s still done some good things. Zendejas just can’t buy a goal to save his own life right now and you can see it’s messing with his head. He just seemingly hasn’t yet wrapped his mind around the notion that if he scores that’s nice, what we really need from him is his lockpicking and ability to operate in a shoebox while dragging defenders inside. And that part he still is doing very well.

Roldan…woof. He’s been dismal, by far the worst player on the field. Zendejas has been good play/bad play (and sometimes WTF-was-that-play), Roldan…well, the less said, the better. Gressel’s been a ton better; that dude is the genuine Lego player, you can plug him in seemingly anywhere and he gets it done. (Gressel’s not a superstar but his soccer IQ is just so durn high, I’ve always really liked that guy.)

My guess would also be we’ll be bringing in a new striker as an injury replacement for Jordan Morris, and it’ll probably be either Nicholas Gioacchini or Bobby Wood…I might stare hard in Wood’s direction; he’s a vet with plenty of NT experience and he’s always been a pretty durn good player when he’s healthy. (Which he now is.) And that in turn would give us the chance to start both Brandon Vasquez and Jesus Ferreira together…my own inclination would be to plug Ferreira in to the Christian Pulisic role at LW, especially since the Djorde/Busio/Sands trio really seems to be clicking in the midfield.

One thing I am morally certain of: Ferreira is one of the USA’s top 23; we need to find him his best spot, and I think that’s probably either as a 10 or as a left-sided wing forward (his skillset is not utterly dissimilar to Pulisic’s).

      • Q: as It’s Ok responded on the other thread Bobby Wood and Nico Giaocchini are not on the provisional list and can’t be called in.

      • JR- Yeah, I saw that. Forgot about that 60-man prelim roster. Means Ebobisse, probably, since he is on the list.

Surely we’re not going to hold onto a gimpy Jordan Morris for the knockouts? I’d have probably chosen Ebobisse over Jordan Morris for this tournament anyhow since we already know what Morris brings (and doesn’t bring) and he’s 28 anyway…so why on Earth bring him if he’s got a bad wheel? Don’t really get that one.

Also saw OK was mentioning Keaton Parks and Timothy Tillman for Aidan Morris and Alan Sonora…sounds good to me.

Again, once we get a healthy replacement for JoMo, that gives us the luxury of moving Ferreira around…he looked fine as a midfielder – he’s a very technical guy – but I personally want him closer to goal since he’s got such an incredibly quick trigger in the box, so I might look at him as a left wing next. Could he be the backup to Pulisic we’ve never really had? Maybe. Three things I am convinced of:

        1) Ferreira is far better facing the goal, and struggles when you turn his back to it because he’s so small, and…

        2) He’s absolutely one of our best 23 but we need to find a spot where he’s always facing the goal and close enough to it to pull that trigger, but he’s not getting roughed up by some brutish centerback.

        And finally…

        3) Ferreira absolutely belongs in Europe. I think there haven’t been many takers because he is making a million and a half in MLS at the moment, and Dallas will (understandably) want at least close to the $20 million they got for Pepi, but I think despite that he may have some suitors now. I just hope it’s with a squad with a clear idea of what he can and cannot do.

      • Q: I think Zendajas is more disappointing than Roldan though. Like we don’t expect much from Roldan right? Just put in a shift, move the ball, play defense. Was Roldan’s wiff any different than Cowell’s by the way? Zendajas you expect him to put the ball within 10 yds of the net, like Cowell he’s so one footed defenders that are focused and disciplined can control him. I did think he settled in after some selfishness and forcing it in the first 20 minutes.
        ————-
Gressell looked super slow. He’s a nice MLS player, he’s a great passer but obviously doesn’t have a legit chance for regular full NT minutes.

      • re “gressel is slow,” he delivered the goods. the USMNT doesn’t seem to get sometimes you need a precision sub who delivers the goods. maybe you’re down a goal in an elimination game.

if you want me to get punchy, we have guys in the first team like LDLT who aren’t fast and don’t even play that good of physical defense. i think djordje and gressel are better technicians than he is.

personally i prefer wing speed but short of playing dest high who off the bench has that. in which case rather than sending out some hustle player like arriola or roldan, we have some technicians, reyna, djordje, gressel. i think you need a guy or two like that available on a bench who can deliver a precision pass or dead ball when we need one. and then a mix of height, speed, hustle, etc.

last point, i saw gressel hustle his butt off to track a man back when they had a break.

      • hey q, on Jesus, he is as good at turning in the midfield to open the weakside or attack straight ahead as there is on this roster imo, has shown it many times…but in the box, like you said, a little different tho he plays to others pretty well from there

I hope he can keep scoring of course, but more I just hope he keeps playing well, making the good decisions and that sweet quick first touch then release on point (shot, pass, whatever) in the area. to me, he’s understanding the game around him in all phases at a higher level now, and using that to move intelligently to be in better positions to allow himself the opportunities to play well

        he’s improving, so cool

      • IV: remember in January when you were complaining that Gressell got called. What does he do, he’s old! Were your complaints. He’s exactly what I told you he was in January, but at the international level outside Concacaf he’s a luxury player. Could he serve like Roldan as the 23rd guy on a roster sure why not. There are 4 or 5 guys on this roster that are better free kick/corner takers than anyone not named Gio so we’ll see how it shakes out. He’s played the final ‘14 and ‘29 minutes in games that were over at halftime. We’ll see if he can get the space to put in those crosses against better Concacaf competition as we move forward. (By the way his wife had a baby a day or two after the Jamaica game so he’s only been there for a couple training sessions, that’s why he hasn’t been used much yet)

      • JR,

        Re Gressel

“but at the international level outside Concacaf he’s a luxury player. We’ll see if he can get the space to put in those crosses against better Concacaf competition as we move forward. ”

David Beckham was never considered particularly fast or quick but he found ways to get in his crosses.

Gressel is not in David’s class, but you don’t have to be Under 30, athletic, fast, quick or slick to get in your crosses. And if his crosses are of good quality, you have to decide is Gressel a poor man’s Tony Kroos or the next Glen Davis?

USMNT passing in general is of such shockingly poor quality that Gressel should have a chance to make his case if he does well.

    • dempsey developed into a sniper, though. dempsey-as-dancer was a fairly average if entertaining wing. when dempsey got where the shots went in corners and the passes were placed and crisp he elevated.

i would say that among his competitors here cowell has burst ahead. i like mihailovic but he’s being played more central. i like gressel and you saw last night why, but barely used. but relative to the mess of roldan, morris, and zendejas, he stands out. he can be as wasteful (and freelance dribble as much as zendejas) but has been more productive, relatively.

childhood friend of mine thought what he needs is a holdup-play, turn in small-spaces kind of aspect to his game where it’s not all head at someone then click afterburner. and then obviously the erratic final product.

i’m still not sure if i am looking at a mis-cast wingback. hard working, speed, able to track back, but too simple an offensive idea and just can’t shoot consistently. to be real, we wouldn’t even have to “decide” — yedlin once doubled as back and forward sub. i think jedi and dest could do the same. versatility is useful. we already have some big names parking in the lineup. what we need is filling some holes and then danger off the bench.

  6. Too early to tell if it will be Canada, Guatemala or Guadeloupe. Canada has been poor with their B team but Cuba is down to 14 field players with defections and card suspensions. But if the other match isn’t a draw Canada at best will be 2nd. If it ends in a draw Guatemala is at a disadvantage GD because Cuba was full strength when they played. Rubio Rubin went off after 11 mins against Cuba and did not play the 2nd match. Sounds like he’s probably out for a few weeks the rest of GC.

  7. Regardless of the level of competition, back-to-back 6-0 wins is impressive. That level of confidence will keep the opposing teams honest in the knockout stages.

    – Jalen Neal has become the breakout player for this Gold Cup. Great poise, vision and skill at 19 years old.
    – Sands is quietly becoming indispensable in the lone #6 role. I lose track of the number of times he broke up attacks the last 2 games, and started the counterattack. He has to stay healthy.
    – Reynolds has shown he belongs at the wing over Yedlin.
    – Really like Callaghan moving Ferreira back to MF when Vazquez came on. That formation may come in handy in the knockout rounds.
    – Stay healthy M Robinson. We’ll need you for 90 in the knockout rounds.

    • The question is whether or not they really get a chance to compete for their position held by the incumbents. Our current A team had the advantage of coming on the scene after the 2017 disaster, these guys have people ahead of them. I think a coach should wipe the slate clean after a world cup, especially when there is nothing to qualify for, but Gregg doesn’t seem like a clean slate kind of guy.

      • There are a few on this squad that can make the roster for the fall friendlies. This tournament is all about making an impression for a future callup. Neal, Robinson, and Reynolds have a shot at defense. Ream will age out, and Long is slipping in the pecking order. Maybe Sands at a backup #6, but not likely as it’s a crowded midfield. Ferreira is in great form, but likely behind Balogun and maybe Pepi. Cowell just needs maybe another year.

      • Realistically where do you need to see competition? Is Ferreira going to beat out Balogun? Mihailovic going to beat out Reyna? Sands going to beat out Musah or Adams? Realistically Reynolds vs Scally and Dest is probably the one spot. These guys are fighting for spots 15-20 on a roster. They’ll get chances if their playing well for their clubs. Is that fair that Reyna or Pulisic or Weah don’t have to be playing well? Maybe not but they’ve all shown they consistently play well for the NT no matter their club minutes. I think the thing to take away with some grains of salt given the competition (TnT, SKN lower than Martinique, Haiti 2019) is that the team has been able to play with the ball and create chances. That Lleget Acosta midfield in 2019 sucked the life out of you. “Just turn with the ball!” There will inevitably be injuries guys from this group will need to step and take their chances.

      • The team has done well at this Gold Cup.

But it is early. None of these guys will displace anyone on the A team just yet.

That campaign starts when the A team begins prepping for Copa America.

        In the meantime:

+ Many of our A teamers have yet to sort out their day jobs. Once that is done it will clear things up a bit.

+ Many of the best of the Gold Cup/ Nations League people also have club moves to sort out.

By the end of this summer most everyone will hopefully have their day jobs settled for 2023-2024.

Gregg can then see, where everyone is and how they have adapted to their new jobs. Long, Roldan, Ariolla, Zimmerman and Ferreira will be on the Copa America roster automatically so that leaves 18 merit spots open.

  8. Cowell keeps on working on his game a bit more look out he is going to be so scary for opponents. His passing game is getting better and better every game. His dribbling at pace is going to terrify defenders and if that passing range and vision continues to get better defenders aren’t going to contain him. I continue to stand by my word that he will be that LW backup in three years time.

      • Yeah I know. But they could still move to different teams. Hence why I said “European movement” Reynolds will probably be loaned out again and Busio has been garnering Serie A interest.

    • Mochengladbach are very high on Vazquez but FC Cincy have basically said he will not be sold this summer. You can kind of understand supporters shield leaders and they just sold Brenner, but we’ve seen it before with guys the buying club moves on and maybe the player slumps and they don’t move at all. I’d add Neal to your list, too.

      • I really like Neal and his game a lot, but I think another season with the Galaxy is needed before he makes a move.

      • 2tone, definitely think if Neal went to a top 5 league he’d go first to the II/B team for a year or two. Richards spent his first couple seasons on Bayern’s II team.

    • Busio sounded pretty happy at Venezia in his press conference last week.

Westerlo put in a transfer bid last week but Roma or Reynolds seems to be waiting for a better offer. West Ham was said to be interested in May but haven’t made any offers.

      Reply
      • Reynolds is a player, for sure. Good defender, serious athlete, but also fairly skilled. Big upgrade on DeAndre Yedlin (and certainly Reggie Cannon or Shaq Moore), or at least the 2023 version of Yedlin. Surprised Roma doesn’t see anything in him but Jose Mourinho sees the world his own way, and it’s hard to argue with Jose since he’s, well, Jose Mourinho. I’d personally be back-and-forth between Reynolds and Scally at the moment. I’d probably lean in Scally’s direction because he’s the better defender but Reynolds is just so dynamic.

Worth noting Reynolds was Westerlo’s highest-paid player last year. Considering Westerlo’s the #4 team in Belgium, that’s saying something. Also…you can understand why they like the guy, but do you really want your highest-paid player to be your right back? That’s odd to me. It also suggests Reynolds can do better.

Definitely think he’s got the athleticism for the Prem, but it’s still a big jump from Belgium to England…and he already failed to make a dent at Roma. So I’m definitely not sure where the best level for him is. I might want to see if one of the upper-tier Dutch teams like Ajax, PSV or Feyenoord might be interested. Dude is just 22 so there’s time to do an incremental step up, which is usually healthier.

      • Q: Westerlo just came up last season, they were using about half loanees in their starting lineup. I’m sure they will try the same strategy this year to build their roster.

      • reynolds needs to land someplace that will buy and play him. i like reynolds but roma was a stretch. it matters where he lands next as he can’t seem to stay playing and that’s very important to this brain trust.

if westerlo don’t buy reynolds it would be a tad silly for busio to just follow him over. you basically know you’re same place next summer on the eve of copa america which judging by current processes will be a first team event he may not make. i mean, it wouldn’t be dumb, it just wouldn’t be that smart either. in kind of a measure twice cut once kind of way. move once, do it right.

      • IV I think you confused the thread no one was meaning Busio should go to Westerlo. 2tone was just saying he was hoping both Busio and Reynolds would move (not together).
        ——————
I think Westerlo is fine for Bryan if they are bringing in a bunch of loans again. A different Belgian or a Dutch club would be good too. West Ham seems a step too far.
