The EFL Cup third round draw took place on Wednesday with several U.S. men’s national team players learning their opponents.
Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, and Chris Richards are among four American players who will be available for third round action in late-September. Josh Sargent is set to miss ample time for Norwich City due to an ankle injury suffered last weekend in EFL Championship play.
Ream and Robinson both helped Fulham defeat London rivals Tottenham in penalty kicks in the second round this week. The USMNT defensive duo will next welcome Norwich City to Craven Cottage.
Jonathan Tomkinson, who has yet to feature this season for the Canaries, did play in last season’s EFL Cup.
Richards and Crystal Palace will visit Manchester United in the third round in an all-Premier League affair. Richards played 90 minutes in the Eagles 4-2 comeback road win over Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday.
Matt Turner, Ethan Horvath, and Auston Trusty all suffered elimination with their respective clubs this week. Turner made one save in Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 home defeat to Burnley while Horvath was un unused substitute.
Trusty made his Sheffield United debut in a 3-2 penalty shootout loss to Lincoln City at Bramall Lane. The USMNT defender played 90 minutes as part of a three-back system.
Here is the EFL Cup third round draw involving American players:
Antonee Robinson, Tim Ream and Fulham host Jonathan Tomkinson and Norwich City.
Chris Richards and Crystal Palace visit Manchester United.
Josh Sargent is set to be sidelined for the third round.
Anyone see how Trusty looked versus Lincoln City?
