Chris Richards, Crystal Palace suffer EFL Cup elimination

Chris Richards started in the second-consecutive round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, but the American defender won’t be extending that streak later this fall.

Richards started and logged 90 minutes for Crystal Palace, but the Eagles suffered elimination after falling 3-0 at Manchester United. The U.S. men’s national team centerback started alongside Rob Holding in his second-ever appearance at Old Trafford.

Alejandro Garnacho’s opening goal in the 21st minute gave the Red Devils an early advantage before Casemiro doubled their lead just six minutes later.

Anthony Martial slotted home Manchester United’s third goal of the night in the 55th minute, with Casemiro setting up the Frenchman. Andre Onana was only troubled twice in the home clean sheet.

Richards won one duel, made two interceptions, and two recoveries, but overall the entire Crystal Palace backline struggled in the match.

The 23-year-old is likely to return to the bench this weekend with the Eagles facing the Red Devils in Premier League play on Saturday. Richards has only appeared in one league match this season.

  1. the other day i was given grief for suggesting many european teams run out bench players for cup games. well, richards, half his minutes this year are cups, and this was a rare start. CP ran out 4/11 of the lineup from fulham 3 days ago. the article even basically says, well, back to the bench this weekend.

    • You weren’t given grief, you were proven wrong that teams treat the Champions League like the EFL Cup. You’re still saying Palace starting 4 regulars is the same as AC Milan starting 9 regulars? No one in the Champions League was rolling out 4 regulars last week in the group stage, just as Rangers and PSV weren’t playing only 4 starters in CL qualifiers that you tried to float a month ago. You do understand the difference between 4 and 9 right?

      • Playing 9 is still trying to win. Playing 4 is giving experience and hoping it works. You called playing two backups the B team last week. You said AC Milan didn’t care if they won or not.
