Ricardo Pepi, Rokas Pukstas nominated for 2023 Golden Boy award

The 2023 Golden Boy Award field was announced this week with two American players being named to the list.

PSV striker Ricardo Pepi and Hajduk Split midfielder Rokas Pukstas were named to the 100-player shortlist for the first time in their respective careers.

Pepi, 20, joined the Eredivisie giants from FC Augsburg this summer. The U.S. men’s national team forward has scored once in five appearances for PSV, recently qualifying for the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Pepi has scored seven goals in 16 caps for the USMNT, winning Concacaf Nations League titles in 2021 and 2023.

Pukstas, 19, is currently sidelined for Hajduk Split during the early stages of the Croatian first division season. The Oklahoma native has scored two goals in two league appearances this season and enjoyed a breakout campaign last season.

Pukstas has made 14 appearances to date for the USMNT U-20’s, scoring two goals and featuring in the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Jude Bellingham, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Rico Lewis are among the standout European stars named to the current list. Barcelona starlets Gavi and Pedri are recent winners of the award, after being chosen in 2022 and 2021 respectively.

Other current stars have won the award including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland.
