Joe Scally didn’t start Friday’s match against Mainz, but did come off the bench and make a major impact in a comeback draw for Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Scally came off the bench and scored the equalizing goal for Gladback in a 2-2 Bundesliga draw with Mainz. The U.S. men’s national team defender now heads into international duty off the back of his second senior goal for the German side.
The 20-year-old Scally came off the bench in the 79th minute with Gladbach trailing 2-1 on home soil. With the hosts seeking a tying goal late, Scally came to the rescue with a sensational right-footed finish.
Scally’s looping right-footed shot found the top-left corner, giving Marco Rose’s squad a 2-2 scoreline.

He also won his lone duel in the match while also making one clearance and completing all 12 of his passes. Scally now heads into USMNT camp for home friendlies against Germany and Ghana.
Gladbach, who sits 12th in the league table, will return to action on Oct. 22 against Cologne.

I feel like Striker and It’s you’re arguing about two different things. Striker is suggesting Scally could do the job given Jedi is not in camp. Just as he has done the job of playing LWB/LB for BM when someone is hurt for them. It’s is saying we aren’t going to be world class with a RB being serviceable at LB. That if this team is going to have the depth to compete thru an entire tournament we need a left footed LB that can combine with our right footed LW who wants to come inside. Scally and Dest being right footed prefer using the same space Pulisic, Reyna, or Weah want to be in when on the LW. Jedi stays out of Puli’s way but his technique isn’t really up to Puli’s so they are often disjointed. Lund is left footed DeJuan Jones is right footed but more comfortable with his left foot than Joe or Serge, FBRef lists Jones as “both” footed.
I’ve been really impressed with Jones so far and I think if he wasn’t already 26 the dude might well be on track for a Champions League type career like some of the upper-tier regulars like Pulisic and McKennie. IMHO he’s got the best of both worlds as a LB…he’s really, really good with using that left foot to drop in crosses, but he can also cut inside and hammer shots with his right. IV did point out – correctly – that a right-footed guy will put the ball on his right foot when he dribbles and that does expose the ball more than a natural leftie who dribbles with his left…it didn’t show up at all in the Gold Cup, and I’m curious to see if it does show up against the likes of Ghana and Germany. It may not. Jones is also really fast and sudden and he seems to pick his moments well, and when you see him advancing the ball it’s because he saw space and had the jets to get into it.
And of course I’m also curious to see the big acid test you go through with every USMNT defender prospect: how well he defends against top-tier Internationals. The jury’s still very much out there. But I do think Jones has a real chance to get himself a big boost for both the Nats and a potential Europe move with a good showing this window. Or he could fizzle like Zendejas did. TBD, there.
We don’t need a left footed left back. We need somebody who can play left back irrespective if they are left or right footed. Scally has shown he can play left back many times in the Bundesliga so the only question that remains is whether or not he is better at left back than the others at the position. It’s silly to say well only this type of player can play here and that type of player can play there when history is littered with people who excelled at every position despite being “too much this” or “too little that”
The problem isn’t necessarily a right footed LB. It’s that the LW is also right footed. They would tend to always be in each others way likewise both positions would be trying to avoid getting behind the backline and crossing with their weak foot. If the idea is to play out of the back and push the FBs into attack have a left footed LB is optimal, but not a deal breaker in a pinch. I mean PSV brought in Dest to at least play part of the time as Van Anholt’s backup on the left and Scally fills in at LB when needed for Mochengladbach.
Give Lund and DeJuan Jones all of the minutes at LB this window, we have to see if those 2 are proper second options behind Jedi. Lund looked more than competent last window and he’s young, while DJ looked pretty good in the GC(had a helluva assist)and has for his career as a LB tbh.
Booo! Scally has not started for a while and deserves it, family issues didn’t see him play last window, you and ok to 2 think are wildin and always trying to play me like im crazy and a troll when i am not! Lund can start versus Ghana. Scally hung with top 15 Urugand was kicked in the face and still stayed in and battled it out like an American soldier 🇺🇸 !
I never suggested you were a troll, and definitely have never said it, but I do get the feeling you think your opinion is the only one that’s valid or makes sense. Most of our outside backs can play on both sides, doesn’t mean they should, and it makes no sense to bring in 2 LB’s only to play a RB at LB. Tbh, Scally is still trying to cement his place as the unquestioned backup behind Dest and RB is the deepest position in the pool so him getting benched of late bares watching
Ronnie’s how about this as a compromise? Scally and Dest start vs Germany and Lund and Jones start vs Ghana.
LOL, why not see if Lund and DJ can compete against Ghana and Germany at LB, and give Dest and Scally starts separately against those 2. I just don’t think we need to see Scally on the left, and we have some younger prospects coming out at LB as well, what do you think it serves by putting him there?
Scally is better than Lund and Jones that’s the point of me putting him there also no A Robinson. He not displacing Dest as RB. Only other LB is emerging is Noah Allen from Miami what other younger prospects are you imagining pulling out of thin air that are emerging better than Scally? Also Lund older than scally by one year.
Striker-
I agree Scally’s ahead of Jones and Lund at this time in terms of career…the thing is, though, is he ahead of them as a pure left back?
Truthfully, neither Scally nor Dest has looked particularly good – like, at all – when put at left back in the past.
Quozzel we have not seen Scally enough to say he is bad at LB? Are you, OK to think, and Ronniet all slow at reading comprehension? I SAID SCALLY IS VERSATILE NOT A STRAIGHT LB WE DONT HAVE A ROB SO LETS USE DEPTH AND SCALLY AT LB YOU ALL BEING CLOSED MINDED, purposely misunderstanding me cause im Black Afro and Brown Native American Taino Puertorican American! Not going back and forth with you all, we will see what Greg does!
Striker: no one commenting with you today cares what your skin color is. There are a few commenters who pop in here from time to time that might but Q and Ronnie are not. I know that you face prejudice in your life, but it’s not happening in this conversation. They are arguing that talented players playing their natural position are better than a superbly talented player playing at his not best position. It’s an argument that’s been had since football began. It’s also a little bit of it’s a friendly let’s see what these guys can do vs it’s Germany we’ve got to win and show the world how good we are.
@ Johnny razor you dont lnow them personally, that’s what they all say Miles Robinson was wrongfully accused of stealing when he didn’t, but skin color don’t matter? Whatever, be closed minded like the rest and Berhalther. They are discounting me cause my real face is shown. Paint black and brown people as crazy if we don’t cosign with dominant society!
Striker you are right I don’t know them but I’ve been sharing this space with them for over 10 years. I’ll also add since they don’t show their face you don’t know who they are either. I personally don’t because my employer strongly discourages us using our names and photos on sites that are public, I’d imagine most others have similar reasons. I’m not a black man so I’m not going to tell you how to think or feel, I will tell you that if I disagree with your opinion it’s on soccer differences and soccer differences alone.
WHAT. A. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
Start him at LB versus ze Germans and havd either Richaards or Ream sit back while he attacks overlaps like Dest! Good job Scall, keep it up bro!
What’s nice is either Dest or Scally can play LB. And with Jedi out those two are certainly my pick whichever side they’re on
So Scally’s goal came from RB position, and your idea is to have him at LB? No country in Europe that wins any tournaments has right footed players at LB. This casual fan talk at its best with Dest & Scally at LB for the US. Dest got smoked last week playing LB. PSV lost 4-0. Scally has never used his left foot at any match period. You were the main one clamoring on about J Morris not going to Europe over his dog for 5 years and never let up, and STILL don’t pay attention to what’s going on in Europe? Very contradictory, mysterious!
He is not better than Dest at RB atm. He is versatile do you not know what that means? He can use both feet Einstein, Mr ok to think 😂; the contradiction and oxymoron.
So during the Uruguay friendly when Berhalther switched Scally to LB second half he didn’t use his left foot? Get outta here you 🤡, your not smarter than me. Take your aggression out on someone else who is a coward unlike me! Jermain Jones and I said what we said look at Morris MLS scrub with no European glory or exp. Not my fault he didn’t challenge himself but when Jermaine Jones and I call him out your in you feelings for what. Mysterious Striker 91 out! Again why Miles Robinson was wrongfully accused for stealing when he didnt you and all the other alabaster us men supporters failnto ignore that!
I saw that in real time……amazing shot after just coming on. Congratulations kid!!!!!
