Gio Reyna earned back-to-back starts for the U.S. men’s national team this month and now heads back to Borussia Dortmund with a major confidence boost.
Reyna earned SBI Man of the Match honors at Geodis Park in the USMNT’s 4-0 friendly win over Ghana on Tuesday night. The AC Milan midfielder registered his first international brace, logging 45 minutes for the second-straight match.
The 20-year-old was in the right spot to deliver the opening goal in the 10th minute, volleying home inside of the Ghana box for a 1-0 lead. Sergino Dest’s original shot was blocked in the box, but Reyna was left open to deliver a confident strike into the back of the net.
After Christian Pulisic and Balogun both netted goals to extend the USMNT’s lead to 3-0, Reyna saved his best moment for last. On an indirect free kick in the box, Reyna rifled a right-footed shot into the top-right corner for a 4-0 USMNT lead heading into half-time.
Reyna led all players with two fouls drawn, while he also won four of seven duels, and completed 97% of his passes.
After a summer injury delayed his start to the season, Reyna will now return to Borussia Dortmund with aspirations of playing a key role through the rest of the fall.
Reyna edged out Timothy Weah, Sergino Dest, and Christian Pulisic for Man of the Match honors.
