The U.S. men’s national team’s No. 9 battle will continue this September and two of the leading candidates will face off in the EFL Championship on Saturday.
Haji Wright and Josh Sargent meet for the first of two regular season meetings in England. Both Wright and Sargent have two goals apiece through the opening stages of the new season and will be seeking to add to those totals in Saturday’s contest.
Wright enjoyed a stellar first season with Coventry City last year, finishing tied with Ellis Simms for the most goals scored (19). The USMNT forward carried that over into an impactful March window in CONCACAF Nations League play before also featuring in the Copa America.
Sargent also registered double-digit goals for Norwich City, but did not feature with the USMNT as much as he would’ve hoped due to injury. The Missouri native remains a key weapon for the Canaries this season and will need to be impactful if they want to be part of the promotion race.
A strong conclusion to the first spell of league matches could be a key spark for both players ahead of potential USMNT duty this September.
