Morris, Middlesbrough roll past Aaronson, Leeds United in EFL Cup

In the first-ever club meeting between Aidan Morris and Brenden Aaronson on Wednesday night, it was Morris and Middlesbrough who had the last laugh.

Morris and Middlesbrough rolled past Aaronson and Leeds United 3-0 in EFL Cup first round action. It marks the second-straight win for Michael Carrick’s men across all competitions this season.

After a goal-less first half, Middlesbrough broke the deadlock in the 50th minute through Anfernee Dijksteel’s curling strike. The full back cut into the Leeds United box before drilling a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

Delano Burgzorg doubled Middlesbrough’s lead 10 minutes later before Josh Coburn capped the visitors lead at 3-0 in the 67th minute.

Morris played 90 minutes in midfield, leading all players in duels won (7) and dribbles completed (3). Middlesbrough will next host Stoke City in the second round later this month.

Aaronson, who was substituted off after 63 minutes, created one goalscoring opportunity.

Both teams resume EFL Championship play on Saturday with Leeds United visiting West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough taking on Derby County.

      • He had 17g in the Premier League in the season before signing his new contract. Even at the start of 2021 he had 1g 2a his first five matches and a NT callup for WC qualifiers, then missed 2 months with injury. Came back played 22 minutes scored a goal. Then missed all but 3 games the rest of the season. Before those injuries he was pretty effective.
