U.S. Soccer will have to look elsewhere to fill the vacant U.S. men’s national team head coaching role.
Pellegrino Matarazzo has confirmed his stay at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, the club announced Tuesday. Matarazzo, 46, was reportedly offered the USMNT head coaching position earlier this week, per German outlets Bild and Kicker.
“It is extremely important to create clarity and calm in this turbulent phase,” Matarazzo said in a club interview. “I am proud to be the coach of this team and am very much looking forward to competing with the boys in European competition in the new season. I am convinced that with the right additions to the squad we will have another successful season.”
The 46-year-old is currently on his third managerial position at club level with Hoffenheim. Matarazzo joined the Bundesliga club in February, taking over for the fired Andre Breitenreiter.
He has won 20 of his 52 matches in charge of Hoffenheim. Prior to his move there Matarazzo managed Stuttgart from December 2019 to October 2022. He helped the club fight off relegation in Spring of 22′.
Hoffenheim opens its competitive schedule on August 16 against Wurzburger Kickers in German DFB Poker play.
I agree, I’m not jumping for joy about Henry
Agreed. USSF has de-value the equity on USNT.
USSF ran with like Corp. but USSF sucks in Capitalism.
I guess no one wants the job. That’s not a good look.
I don’t think this job is as high profile as some want to think.
Could also be when you know you aren’t the guy that’s getting the job, you put out this statement so it doesn’t look like they didn’t pick you. All the reporting that came out after the Bild/Kicker story was he was in the final group but that USSF hadn’t offered anyone the job.
Possibly. I guess it’s still early days.
Feels to me they’re waiting on Thierry Henry. At least to let him make his pitch, maybe Pellegrino just didn’t want to wait with Bundesliga approaching.
if it’s henry that’s worse than pellegrino. age group coaching isn’t pro team coaching, nor at U23 is it the development job people are pretending. belgium disappointed. he was bad as a MLS coach. nor should we be in the business of treating a coach hire as a hype opportunity building marketing off the olympics.
i am at a loss what he has “done.” we need real coaching not buzz because the home oly team with a strong development system wins. like if someone can’t explain to me what henry as coach actually offers, so what. it justifies hiring him to coach our U23s.
to me he was in the bottom tier of where we could go, with vieira. renaud had at least done something successful before, with adults. i want a darned winner and off the value hire hopefulness/cheapness.
i don’t see the point in all this multiple candidate interview stuff. pick a guy and offer a number. friendlies start the second week of september. i want time where the hire can take the team in his own personnel direction and isn’t just perpetuating pointless continuity because they’ve barely had the job a week before the roster goes out and the camp starts.
IV,
“i don’t see the point in all this multiple candidate interview stuff. pick a guy and offer a number.”
You don’t see the point?
How do you know they haven’t already as you say, picked a guy, offered a number and got turned down?
What are the odds that the selection committee or whoever is doing the hiring, has actually ever met any of these candidates in person? And if they have not, then are you going to offer a couple of million to someone you’ve never met, based on their record and stats and whatever else you’ve dug up on them?
Do you believe in marrying a mail order bride?
“friendlies start the second week of september. i want time where the hire can take the team in his own personnel direction and isn’t just perpetuating pointless continuity because they’ve barely had the job a week before the roster goes out and the camp starts.”
Gregg had that. How did that work out?
It’s probably already too late for what you want. If they hire someone tomorrow, when are they going to evaluate your alternative USMNT player pool (the 26-30 players that Gregg did not usually call in)?
In terms of “pointless continuity “, if you’re the new El Jefe, don’t you think it’s important for them to, right away, see for themselves if Gregg’s preferred regular 16 or so players are as fucked up as you, IV, say they are?
