The EFL Cup second round is vastly approaching this month with a few U.S. men’s national team players learning their opponents.
Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards were among several American players to learn their opponents for the second round of the annual competition. Matt Turner and Tyler Adams also will be among the USMNT players set for early cup involvement this August, if they are in their respective squads.
Robinson and Fulham will make the trip to League One side Birmingham City in the second round. The USMNT left back scored once in the last head-to-head visit between these two clubs, a 6-2 victory for the Cottagers.
Richards and Crystal Palace host second-tier Norwich City in the second round in the first meeting between the clubs since February 2022. The matchup could pit Richards up against international teammate Josh Sargent.
Sargent did not feature in the Canaries’ 4-3 home victory over Stevenage in the first round.
Turner has been linked with a move away from Nottingham Forest, but should he stay, he will face off with Newcastle United in an All-Premier League contest. In another all-EPL affair, Adams and Bournemouth will make the trip to London side West Ham United.
Several other American players featured in first round victories including Aidan Morris, Haji Wright, Donovan Pines and Gabriel Slonina.
Pines and Slonina both featured in Barnsley’s 4-2 shootout win over Wigan Athletic, setting up a home match vs. Auston Trusty and Sheffield United. Pines scored his first goal of the season for Barnsley while Slonina registered two shootout saves and five in total.
Trusty scored his first Blades goal in a 4-2 victory over League One visitors Wrexham.
Wright and Coventry City defeated Bristol City 1-0 in the first round and will face Oxford United in the next round.
Lynden Gooch came off the bench to assist once in Stoke City’s 2-0 road win over Carlisle United. The Potters will make the trip to fellow EFL Championship side Middlesbrough, who shutout Leeds United 3-0.
Aidan Morris, who joined Michael Carrick’s squad over the summer, logged his second-straight 90-minute outing in midfield.
Duane Holmes featured off the bench in Preston North End’s 2-0 win over Sunderland. Holmes will now aim to feature in a trip to Harrogate Town in the next round.
Ethan Horvath and Reggie Cannon did not feature in the first round but could be available for the second round. Horvath and Cardiff City host newly-promoted Premier League side Southampton while Cannon and QPR face Luton Town in London.
The EFL Cup second round schedule will run from August 27-28.
