Barnsley will be without the services of Chelsea loanee Gabriel Slonina for the foreseeable future.
Slonina is expected to miss four-to-six weeks after suffering a hand injury last week for the EFL League One side. The U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper did not dress in Barnsley’s recent 2-0 league victory over Rotherham United on Friday and manager Darrell Clarke confirmed his upcoming absence after the win.
“He’s out four to six weeks,” Clarke told reporters, transcribed by The Barnsley Chronicle. “Unfortunately he did it in the warm-up the other week. The good news is he doesn’t need operating on. We will link up with Chelsea to try to get him back as quick as possible.”
Slonina joined Barnsley on a season-long loan spell from Chelsea in August and immediately jumped into the starting lineup. The 20-year-old has made 14 combined appearances for the club (11 in League One, 3 in EFL Cup), helping the Reds eliminate Wigan Athletic and Sheffield United in EFL Cup play.
However, a 7-0 hammering at Manchester United saw Barnsley eliminated from the competition.
Slonina did not feature in Barnsley’s 3-1 FA Cup victory over Port Vale last weekend and will now miss the remainder of the November schedule.
Barnsley sits fourth in League One and resumes league play on November 16 against Cambridge United.
