Close to three months since his last Borussia Dortmund appearance, Gio Reyna finally made his long-awaited return to Bundesliga play on Saturday.
Reyna played the final 15 minutes as Nuri Sahin’s squad defeated visiting Freiburg 4-0 at Signal Iduna Park. It marked Reyna’s second appearance of the season for the Black and Yellow and his first since August 24 in all competitions.
The U.S. men’s national team attacker had been sidelined with a groin injury that he suffered on international duty in September.
Maximilian Beier and Felix Nmecha both scored in the first half to give Dortmund a 2-0 lead before Julian Brandt and Jamie Byone-Gittens added second-half goals to pad the eventual home victory.
Reyna completed all 12 passes and made one defensive recovery in his cameo. Fellow American attacker Cole Campbell did not feature in the match.
Borussia Dortmund next travels to Dinamo Zagreb in UEFA Champions League play on Wednesday.
