Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Reyna, Robinson, and more

Gio Reyna enjoyed one of his more positive days in quite sometime on Sunday.

Reyna scored his first goal of the Bundesliga season as Borussia Dortmund tied Hoffenheim 1-1. It marked Reyna’s first goalscoring performance for club or country since March 24.

The 22-year-old called his own number in the 46th minute, drilling a right-footed shot into the top-right corner. It was Reyna’s first goal at club level since May 13, 2023.

However, Dortmund would concede a late equalizer, coughing up the opportunity to earn a crucial three points at home.

Reyna logged 76 minutes in the match and will now aim to keep his starting role long-term. Nuri Sahin’s squad will visit Wolfsburg on December 22 in their next league match.

In England, Antonee Robinson assisted twice in Fulham’s road draw with Liverpool.

In Spain, Johnny Cardoso excelled in Real Betis’ road win.

  1. JR,

Okay, but I still would like to know if you can think of a reasonably attainable American CB you think might be actually be useful for PSV?

    • Maybe Wydner or Banks this summer that would be a good next step. I think PSV would have been a better landing spot for Trusty.

  2. Keep it up Gio. Glad I got the Gio Reyna and Cole Campbell mods for Fifa 16 for ps3. Can’t wait to see how Gio continues this journey, alongside Cole Campbell. Both will be lethal for Borussia Dortmond.

      • Midwest ref,

“PSV loses when Pepi does not start”

This season PSV 14 wins, 2 losses and 0 draws.
        Pepi has 5 starts

Pepi is hot but your math is a little exaggerated.

      • Truly they needed an American CB because that was the biggest issue. They should have given up 1 or 2 from just gaffes from their CBs. De Jong wasn’t good but matching him with Perisic was the bigger issue to me. You had two old and speed challenged attackers alongside Tillman. 3 attackers none of whom are going to stretch the backline with pace. They got a little more dynamic when Lang and Pepi came on and Tillman slid more into the dual 10 rule. I couldn’t find anything that Richie was injured so perhaps he’ll start in the cup match. They play semi-pro team from the 3rd Division so it should be fairly easy work on Tuesday.

      • JR,

“they needed an American CB ”

Who do you suggest? It would be a step down , in theory , for McKenzie.

Any American MLS CB’s besides Ream?

      • Vacqui: that wasn’t what I meant. Just that DeJong/Pepi at striker argument wasn’t the main issue. Their CBs were terrible Saturday. Honestly Aaron Long would have been better than Boscagli and Flamingo were. Those two have generally been solid this season but were poor in this one.

    • Vacqui you gotta get out more. Ream is crap, here is a list. Jalen Neal, Grayson Dettoni, Arnie Chase, Noah Allen, Matai Akinmboni, Noah Cobb, and Noahkai Banks, Chris Mbai-Assem, and Tyler Meiser

  4. Reyna with a golazo today. Hopefully this trend continues for him. A healthy in form and hungry Reyna only strengthens the USMNT attack. And he is becoming a much better two way player.
