Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Sands, Robinson, and more

Bundesliga side St. Pauli snapped its three-match losing streak on Saturday with James Sands enjoying his first start for the club.

Sands started and played 71 minutes as St. Pauli earned a 2-0 road victory over Heidenheim. The New York City FC loanee delivered a solid shift on both ends of the field as he continues his loan spell abroad. Sands won five duels, drew one foul, and made five defensive recoveries as St. Pauli scored once in each half to claim the road result.

After only claiming four league victories before Saturday’s, St. Pauli moved three points clear of the bottom three. Alexander Blessin’s squad will return home on Matchweek 19 against fellow strugglers Union Berlin.

Sands now has three appearances under his belt for St. Pauli and will certainly add more under his belt in the coming weeks.

In England, Antonee Robinson and Fulham defeated Leicester City. Chris Richards and Crystal Palace edged West Ham United. Catarina Macario scored in a lopsided WSL win for Chelsea.

In Italy, Tim Weah scored in Juventus’ home victory over AC Milan. Weston McKennie also excelled in Thiago Motta’s starting lineup.

In France, Mark McKenzie and Toulouse earned a road draw at Lyon.

In Spain, Johnny Cardoso went the distance but Real Betis lost to Deportivo Alaves.

In Scotland, Erik Palmer-Brown made his first start for Panathinaikos. Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty, and Dante Polvara all advanced in the Scottish Cup. Marlon Fossey and Standard Liege picked up three points in Belgium. Griffin Yow scored once for Westerlo. Ricardo Pepi featured but PSV lost to PEC Zwolle.

  1. Interesting surprise to see St. Pauli isn’t wasting any time working in James Sands…I don’t think he’s even been there a week and he’s already starting. Good to see. I’ve always thought Sands was better than a off-year Gold Cup fringe guy and could have a role on a World Cup squad as a 5/6 tweener…a gig in the B1 certainly gives him a chance to prove it. I do know I’m rooting for him. I’d have loved to have gotten an apples-to-apples comparison between Sands and Lennard Maloney, the other 5/6 tweener (though one with a very different profile) in our pool, but Larry did mention Maloney likely didn’t dress because Heidenheim is about to move him.

  2. In cases you missed it US U20s lost to Nashville 3-0. Goals from Mukhtar, Woobens Pacius, and Aden Sipic. Sipic and Pacius only played in MLS Next Pro last season. Lot of guys missing for U20s but a lot of Euro based players like Dettoni, Harangi, and Figueroa were there. Nothing for USSF on this just coverage from Nashville.

  3. Diego Kochen and Pedro Soma fell 3-0 to Ponferradina. Soma with a first half red card, that to me looked harsh, probably not even a foul. Diego somewhat at fault on the first goal coming for ball he couldn’t get to well and weakly punched. Rebound then was put in off his fingertips.

    • Hey 2tone, I don’t know if he has looked at switching. I was just thinking about RB and LB dept. I thought he would be a good addition to the dept chart. Was thinking about GK and num 9 dept too.

  4. What do you all think about recruiting Nataniel Brown who plays LB for Eintracht Frankfurt? Think he would have to do switch because he played for Germany u21. Would be nice to have Robinson as top choice, Tolkin, and Brown as backups.

    • Not sure he’d be in a hurry to switch. LB is one of Germany’s weaker positions, the guys playing currently are both 30. If they do something like not bringing him to the U21 Euros this summer the US might have an in but for right now there isn’t much soccer motivation to switch. Unless he has a personal desire to wear the red, white, and blue. I’m sure some of it was posturing but Poch did say he wasn’t recruiting anyone.
