Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Aaronson, Musah, and more

Paxten Aaronson’s stellar loan spell at FC Utrecht continued Saturday at the home of the reigning Eredivisie champions.

Aaronson scored his sixth goal of the season as Utrecht earned a 2-2 draw with PSV. Despite conceding a late equalizer, the third-place side earned another positive result against one of the Eredivisie’s best clubs.

The 21-year-old Aaronson headed home Oscar Fraud’s cross into the bottom-right corner to give Utrecht a then 2-1 lead. It marked Aaronson’s eighth goal contribution for the club this season.

He finished the match with three tackles completed, six duels won, and one interception made.

Aaronson and FC Utrecht will next host NAC Breda on Saturday, March 1.

  1. Hopefully Tomkinson can start to build up the next few years and move to a better league.

Good to see Yow heating back up. Needs a move this summer.

Paxten Aaronson continuing his good season. Don’t know where he may fit in with Eintracht. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a permanent move away from Eintracht in the summer. But in saying that the coaching staff really do like Paxtens game at Eintracht.

    • He only came in with 10 minutes left and finished the game.

For me as a BVB fan it makes me so frustrated that both coaches they’ve had this season seem to not realize what is missing from the team is exactly what Gio would provide – creativity through the midfield. This team is all about send it wide and hope for a moment of individual brilliance from Gittens or Adeyemi (or Malen), But there is nothing happening in the middle of the park. Gross has been very disappointing and I’d start Reyna over Sabitzer any day. Reyna offers more going forward and has improved defensively. Gross can and should be able to cover any defensive drop from Sabitzer to Reyna if there is any.

This season Reyna has only had 2 Bundesliga appearances of over 25 minutes. In those games he has 2 goals. His CL minutes have been more plentiful – 4 appearances of more than 25 minutes and has one assist. So put together – in six games with more than 25 minutes he has 3 goal contributions.

In the last game BVB was down 2-0 at half. The coach makes a sub at halftime. He brings on a DM (and not a good one) to start the second half and takes out Sabitzer – the more attacking of the midfielders. He went MORE defensive when he needed goals. Needless to say they didn’t score any goals at all.

So frustrating as a BVB fan and a USMNT fan.

The USMNT starters are now maturing into the leaders and key players for their teams that they were too young and inexperienced to be in the last WC cycle – Pulisic and Musah regularly going 90 for AC and Pulisic being a team leader (watching Musah mature this season has been so great to watch), McKennie and Weah the same at Juventus with McKennie becoming a leader – even captaining the Old Lady for a CL game, Jedi the MVP of his team in the Prem, Adams starting and doing the only thing he knows how to do – be a leader on the field. That old argument – that I made – about being a squad player on a big team doesn’t equal greatness (there are many countries with rosters similar to the US that you would think could compete to win a WC). But that argument is less and less viable. These guys are playing against the best of the best week in and week out and their teams are depending on them to lead the charge and they are meeting most of the challenges.

Reyna has the talent to be one of these guys and should be but for whatever reason a BVB that is having a terrible season can’t put the guy on the field for more that 25 freaking minutes more than six times?! We are down 2-0 to BOCHUM and you bring on Ozcan at halftime??? It’s ridiculous.

      • Thanks for explaining Master of The Obvious. I am glad our players are getting valuable mins. Wish Reyna and Campbell would get consistent playing time.

      • This was about my exact comment, but I did not get to it yet. I am also a BVB fan and very frustrated with the team and coaching. They continue to roll out the same line-up (with maybe an exception on the back line) game after game. It is not like the team has been winning in league play lately with this line-up. Since returning after the break they have 1-W / 1-T / 5-L. The 1 win came against a team in the bottom 3, and 2 of the losses came against the other 2 teams in the bottom 3.

I agree they are missing the creativity and should give Reyna a shot, not just 10 minutes here or there at the end of the game. Gittens constantly goes down the left hand side, gets to the 18 yard box and tries to cut it back on his right for a shot. Too predictable. Adeyemi just tries to beat everyone from the right hand side with his speed.

With the team really struggling this much lately and they have nothing in the offensive third, they still do not give a Reyna a shot. Maybe there is more than we see, but I have not seen anything reported about Reyna. I honestly think he needs to find a new home where he plays. Obviously his time at BVB is done, if the past coach and now current coach (even though only 2 games in) will not give him more minutes. When he does enter the game you can see he has the vision that the other players just do not have.

On another note, I really enjoyed watching McKennie and Weah against Inter yesterday.

      • Matt R yeah I didn’t watch the game, so I thought he was yanked after 10 mins cause he was injured or not playing well how article was worded lol.

      • Given his track record Nico is more about settling the team defensively first. This goes against BVB’s DNA but it is also why Nico was brought in.

It doesn’t look like BVB will qualify for Europe next season so they have to sell one of their wunderkids. Gittens probably brings in the most cash.

If Gio can’t find a way to work himself into the lineup and Nico is successful and stays then Gio will probably leave.

      • Mark – sheeshhh, right?!

Vacqui – it’s true about the solidifying the defense (many new coaches start with that and it’s needed – betting “both teams to score” on BVB and AC Milan games is usually allowing me not to lose ALL my money these days) and that is the only reason I can see for the Nico’s decisions again Bochum. However that explains more his starting lineup that the changes he made after being 2-0 down.

      • “that is the only reason I can see for the Nico’s decisions again Bochum. However that explains more his starting lineup that the changes he made after being 2-0 down.”

I have never been a manager

I certainly have never been a manager who has come into a situation like BVB, where it seems clear that a lot of the front office types have very strong views about which players should play. It seems like he has to manage upward with this batch of strong egotistical “know it alls” looking over his shoulder.
Nico is well respected, but BVB’s player pool is probably all new to him. And while he is well respected, he does not have the kind of clout that a rockstar like Pep, Ancelloti or even a Pochettino has.

The point is I can see where Nico might still be at the stage where he’s trying to figure out which players would work for what Nico wants to do.

BVB did not go from a title contending team full of top players to crap overnight.

And they are not going to get back to the top overnight either.

Gio might be very useful for this motley collection in terms of getting them back to mediocrity quicker but his career would probably best be served by going elsewhere .

You can only be the “Eternal Prospect” for so long.
