AC Milan’s disappointing Serie A campaign has led to several international players looking elsewhere to continue their club careers and Yunus Musah is reportedly the newest on that list.
Fellow Serie A side Napoli is in talks to acquire Musah in a permanent deal from AC Milan, multiple outlets reported Tuesday. AC Milan is asking for close to €25 million for Musah’s services, per reports.
The 22-year-old is coming off his second season with the Rossoneri, where he logged 40 appearances across all competitions. Musah registered three assists in 2,237 minutes of playing time, featuring under both Paulo Fonseca and Sergio Conceicao during the past campaign.
AC Milan did capture the Supercoppa Italiana last winter, but fell in the Coppa Italia Final to Bologna and also failed to secure a European berth.
In total, Musah has made 188 appearances between his time at AC Milan and Valencia, while also earning 47 caps to date with the U.S. men’s national team. The former dual-national came up through the Arsenal youth ranks before moving to La Liga.
He was expected to be part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup but was left off the final roster due to personal issues.
Napoli is fresh off of winning the Serie A title in May, which guaranteed them a return to the UEFA Champions League.
Get. It. Done.
Maybe this is why he declined to play in the Gold Cup. Wanted a good preseason with Napoli.
what i think of the second half is there is a play with about 10′ left where tolkin gets the ball open on the wing, walks it up a couple yards, stops, passes back. switch, wing right side gets it, passes back. no urgency, no to-goal.
the bleeding stopped but so what. it’s textbook berhalter ball and our few chances are like crosses to no one.
this game needed to be on fox or paramount because it is hard to understate how bad it was and it needed volume anger and not dunseth and beasley being stunned and barely articulate.
WHERE. ARE. THE. SUBS??????????????????
starting to figure out yet why i thought about ever single one of the backline choices were poor?
starting to figure out why i found the lack of specialist wings befuddling?
starting to figure out why i thought the roster in general was just lackluster and uninspired as B choices? sorry, bs, this is not as good as we can do for a B team. i call bs.
and the topper is johnny gets to suck 2 games straight. i could get giving mixed bags a second shot but this is a lack of accountability.
the problem right now is the lack of pressure from the front line and midfield. every Swiss player has 10 yards and all day to make a play. a high schooler could play a beautiful ball like the Swiss have been over and over again with all the time and space afforded to them. the lack of just basic hustle and intensity in the simplest stuff–pressure cover balance–is revealing; this group doesn’t know what everyone is doing, they do not defend as a unit; if one guy goes, all must go, basic stuff, and we are not doing even that in our pressure
it’s not sitting back, it’s they keep retreating back infinitely, and are so so so narrow where you can just fly up the wings. an italian or atleti team there is a point where they stop going back and start tackling anyone in their half.
this is like watching tab ramos’ version of the dynamo a few years ago. bunch of defenders in their lines playing zone backing off and off and off. no one actually marked.
you see from the first half a bunch of those guys simply shouldn’t have been called, are substandard. and then this half the competitiveness has stabilized, but they are constrained by the tactical choices. we start to do something then turn around and pass it back. it’s all pointless perimeter possession, few runs off the ball, no one making a run that anticipates someone else. we’re down 4 goals playing keepaway. i’d send you a gift basket. you’re closing out my win. we can barely find feet in the box. how do you expect to score?
napoli is my kind of team, 0.71 goals/game, scored 20 less than second place and still won league. but if i had to guess, when a team that good signs someone like him he’s probably there to rotate league games and play some group UCL and cups.
side point, i keep hearing this 5W 4L stat on poch. that includes january games. you pull the january games he’s 3-4 with the A team. the panama game he dines out on (which was reversed in march when panama’s coach changed tactics and swapped half his lineup) and the 2 grinder games with jamaica. otherwise it’s mexico L panama L canada L turkey L.
Heard that one of their midfielders (Anguissa) might be on the move, so there may be a spot opening up.
Johnny99,
Kevin DeBruyne is headed to Napoli, so if Anguissa is on the move away from Napoli, as of right now, there is no open spot for Musah. Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour are going nowhere.
Papi – yeah, DeBruyne would likely keep Musah on the bench. McTominay would keep Musah on the bench. There’s third midfielder whose name I’m forgetting (not Gilmour), who would probably keep Musah on the bench. I’m not sure that Gilmour would play over Musah, though.
For whatever reason, Conte must like Musah, and Napoli is the defending champion. But Musah needs to get in a situation where he plays regularly and has success. We’ll see if Napoli is that place.
Johnny99,
I agree, Conte likes Musah…because he is versatile. He can help by rotating him into the lineup to spell his starters…at a variety of positions.
Musah definitely needs regular playing time, and I hope he finds it at Napoli, but I think it is unlikely that Musah becomes a regular starter at Napoli.
What has he shown at AC Milan, to show that he merits that?
