UWCL: Macario nets brace, Girma returns, Heaps starts, and more

The UEFA Women’s Champions League resumed on Tuesday with six U.S. women’s national team players featuring in the action.

Catarina Macario scored twice in Chelsea’s dominant 6-0 league phase victory over Austrian side SKN St. Poelten. Fellow USWNT teammate Naomi Girma logged 45 minutes in the starting lineup while Alyssa Thompson played 59 minutes in the Blues attack.

Wieke Kaptein opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 13th minute before Macario doubled the Blues lead before halftime. Johanna Kaneryd played Macario into the Poelten box before the attacker’s low, left-footed drive nestled into the bottom-right corner.

Thompson helped create Chelsea’s third goal of the match, drawing a penalty kick in the second 52nd minute. Macario stepped up and made no mistake, netting her second goal of the season across all competitions.

Sam Kerr’s brace helped pad Chelsea’s lead later in the half while an own goal from St. Poelten defender Lisa Ebert condemned the hosts to further misery.

Macario created a match-high five chances, drew two fouls, and also hit the crossbar once. Thompson created three offensive chances while Girma made two defensive interceptions.

Chelsea sits second in the UWCL table on seven points and unbeaten through its opening three matches of the competition.

The Blues will get back to WSL play in England on Sunday against Liverpool.

Heaps, Shrader, Yohannes all feature in Lyon’s win over Wolfsburg

French club Lyon moved top of the UWCL table after a convincing victory at home over Wolfsburg.

Lindsey Heaps played 90 minutes while Korbin Shrader and Lily Yohannes also featured in a 3-1 triumph over the German visitors. The result moved Lyon to 3-0-0 in league phase play so far this fall.

Heaps helped set up Lyon’s opening goal in the 25th minute, drilling a long-range free kick off of the crossbar. Ada Hegerberg finished up the play to give Lyon a 1-0 advantage.

Hegerberg doubled the hosts lead five minutes later with her second goal of the night.

Wendie Renard’s 73rd-minute penalty kick extended Lyon’s lead to 3-0 before a late Lineth Beerensteyn consolation goal made the final scoreline 3-1 with 10 minutes to play.

Heaps completed 88% of her passes while Shrader won all four of her duels.

Lyon will continue UWCL play on November 19 at Juventus.
