Haji Wright’s hat trick propels Coventry City past Middlesbrough, back into top spot

Coventry City boosted itself back to the summit of the EFL Championship table on Monday night thanks to Haji Wright’s memorable performance.

Wright registered a hat trick on Monday night as the Sky Blues downed Middlesbrough 3-1 in a top-two league clash. The result also capped off a season sweep for Coventry City against its promotion challengers this season.

Wright propelled Coventry City in front after 21 minutes, slotting home Jack Rudoni’s low cross into the back of the net. It marked Wright’s third goal of 2026 and his 11th of the EFL Championship season.

Wright would double his tally and the Sky Blues’ lead in the 55th minute after slotting home a left-footed finish. Carl Rushworth’s goal kick went flying upfield allowing Wright to race onto it and drill a shot into the bottom-right corner.

It marked Wright’s third league brace of the campaign and his first since October 1.

Riley McGree pulled one goal back for Middlesbrough after the hour mark but Wright would put the visitors out of reach four minutes later. Matt Targett’s handball in the box allowed Wright the opportunity to step up and score from the penalty spot to ice the home victory.

Wright’s hat trick was his first at club level since March 15, 2015 against Sunderland.

The result moved the Sky Blues up to 62 points on the season, one point ahead of Middlesbrough in the race for automatic promotion.

Fellow American Aidan Morris played 90 minutes in the loss for Kim Hellberg’s squad.

Coventry City will next travel to West Bromwich Albion on February 21 while Middlesbrough hosts Oxford United on the same day.

  1. Say it again about Wright…when you watch him, he usually reminds you several times he’s a Hella Good finisher. Even when he’s not scoring he’s forcing emergency defending and keepers to stand on their heads. And he has a tendency to arrive big in big games.

I wish his movement was instinctive and constant the way Balogun’s is, but he does not need a lot of looks at goal to do damage, either.

Certainly does look like he’ll be plying his trade in the Prem next season.

  2. Not mentioned is that in the first minute Wright had a header which hit the inside of the post but bounced out. He was definitely on fire today.l

      • If he doesnt fell confident in Balo or Pepi I could see it. Its been over a year since Pepi was actually with the USMNT. Balo hasnt scored in a while for Monaco. I could see him taking one less 10 or DM and adding a 4th striker. Mckennie can play multiple positions. Adding another striker wouldn’t hurt. Berhalters downfall at the 2022 WC was not taking Pepi.

      • The striker position is the position that requires the player to be confident. Both Wright and Pat are riding confidence right now. We saw what that confidence did for Wright against Australia.

      • The most reliable, consistent goalscorer in the player pool is Pulisic.

And. at the moment Weston is on fire. Those two are a safe bet to be on the team and to be playing a lot of minutes.

Nevertheless, with a 26 man roster, they still might take 4 strikers. It’s a good problem to have.

      • Vaq -interesting take. Since this is a discussion about strikers…are you thinking Poch will start to use Pulisic and/or McKennie at the striker position?

Also, regarding consistancy…this season using goals/90 as a measure Pepi is the most consistent goal scoring forward. And since October Pulisic (4) is bottom of the list in number of goals among Agyemang (10), Pepi and Balo (9) and Wright (5). I believe all these players have missed some games with injuries as well. Pulisic hasn’t scored for the USMNT since September 2024 vs New Zealand. Personally I wouldn’t say he is the most reliable or consistent goal scorer in the pool.

But yeah, I agree Pulisic and Weston are likely to get a lot of minutes in the WC…*although* neither have featured a ton with Poch and they have combined for only 1 assist under him. So for me I’m looking a the next window to really give me clarity on how Poch views how to use them. Those last two games were arguably the best this iteration of the USMNT have ever looked (with GB or Poch) and neither Pulisic or McKennie were even in camp let alone on the pitch.

      • I guess it depends on what you mean by a striker. It doesn’t make sense to take 4 of the same type of player, such as 4 players to fill a #9 or a #11 role. I am putting the #10 as an “attacking” midfielder and that is Pulisic, and the #11 is an advanced left sided player.

But, why wouldn’t you take 4 attackers, assuming any of these 4 can play two up front.

4 “strikers”; 3 keepers, leaves 19 other players for midfield and defense.

Would you rather keep a spot in midfield for … lets say Gio . . . or take Balo, Hagi, Pepi and Big Pat?

      • Midwest Ref – it’s going to be a decent squad that doesn’t make the WC roster. Some tough decisions to be made for sure.

Vacq – McKennie starting at the “9” today. Seems to be a CF playmaker more than someone being the focal point of an attack. He had a really nice assist but no shots attempted yet.

      • Betinho,

As of February 17, 2026, Christian Pulisic has scored 32 goals in 82 appearances for the USMNT.
        Goals per Game 0.39

As of February 17, 2026, Ricardo Pepi has scored 13 goals in 34 appearances for the USMNT.
        Goals per Game 0.38

Pulisic’s scoring has been balanced across competitive and friendly matches, with a high volume of goals in World Cup qualifying campaigns:
        • World Cup Qualification: 12 goals in 23 games
        • International Friendlies: 9 goals in 28 games
        • CONCACAF Nations League A: 6 goals in 15 games
        • FIFA World Cup (Finals): 1 goal in 4 games
        • Other (Copa América/Gold Cup): 4 goals
Pepi’s international goals have primarily come during key tournament qualifiers and regional championships:
        • CONCACAF Nations League A: 7 goals in 9 games
        • World Cup Qualification: 3 goals in 10 games
        • International Friendlies: 3 goals in 12 games

Pulisic remains the leading active scorer for the national team and currently ranks fifth on the USMNT’s all-time scoring chart.

The stats between the two players are so close as to be irrelevant.

I don’t give a damn how you label these guys. Clint Dempsey was not a “striker” or a “#9” . But if you needed a goal , he was the guy you looked to.

There is no doubt about Pepi’s goalscoring skills. But if you are comparing him to CP, Christian has done it at a higher level and under greater pressure, arguably , than Ricardo ever has. Pepi is just getting started. I expect great things from him but he still has a lot to prove. I’m sure he’ll get there but RIGHT NOW and going into the World Cup, he is not a better or more reliable goalscorer than CP.

Put it this way , if you could only have one of them in an important game which one would you choose?

      • Betinho,

Let me put this another way. CP and McKennie are almost certainly going to be on the WC team and almost certainly going to play a lot of minutes.

Any tournament roster always places a premium on versatility and Weston and Christian have proven their worth in a variety of roles.

Ricardo is more of a specialist. If, Flo, Wright, and Patrick are all in good goalscoring form then the need for a scoring specialist is not so great. With 26 spots, I would like to see all four strikers go but it all depends on how the midfielders and defenders are looking.

      • Vacq – I’m going to try to glean some info from your oddly defensive response. I hope I understand.

You are not concerned that Pulisic or McKennie have never scored a goal for the USMNT under Poch and together only have one assist. That’s cool. My point was despite us both *agreeing* they will probably (and should) see lots of the pitch at the WC, Pochettino has done well without them. I was wanting to discuss the possibility of that continuing. Poch has done some weird things. Like I said before, I personally am looking forward to the March games for some clear signals of how he will see the squad for the WC. But anything is possible from a guy who played Weah on the left because of his eye dominance.

My mistake for taking your comment about reliable and consistent to mean currently instead of throughout their career. I don’t think anyone would dispute Pulisic’s goal scoring acumen throughout his USMNT career. I think one of the comments in this thread referenced form with regards to pecking order of forwards so I was continuing that train of thought and putting Pulisic in there since you raised his name.

Maybe you missed my question about if you thought Poch would play Wes and Puli as strikers (unless your part about not giving a damn about how I label players was in response to that). If Poch does do that it would shuffle the roster quite a bit and allow for a few different players to make the squad. Like I said…your take was interesting – especially after McKennie showed up starting and playing the first half at the 9 in the CL for Juventus. However your second response where you referred to a label – Strikers – and did not include Pulisic and McKennie in your list of players makes me think you don’t think they’d be brought in and take a striker roster spot.

Anyway, I appreciate your thoughtful responses to my posts. Discussing the game with you is always a pleasure.

  3. Haji Wright was “switched on” this game……AGAINST MIDDLESBROUGH. He hit the bar, forced a great save from Brynn and still came away with a hattrick. Sensational!!!

    • Haji got some good service and took his chances. The header early in the game that hit the post was a good effort. The first goal was a good play on a good cross on the ground. Good PK for the hat trick too.

Coventry had a midfielder – I think a Japanese international – who really played well too and caused Middlesbrough real problems. The other attacker for Coventry tried, but never looked like he was really going to score.
