Americans Abroad Weekend Rewind: Scally, Balogun, and more

Borussia Moenchengladbach’s home shutout win over St. Pauli helped the club inch even further away from the Bundesliga’s bottom-three this weekend.

Joe Scally delivered a strong shift in Friday’s 2-0 win, registering one assist as Gladbach moved four points clear off the relegation zone. The U.S. men’s national team defender was solid on both ends of the pitch, helping Gladbach pick up their second victory out of the past three matches.

Kevin Stoger’s free kick finish boosted the hosts in front 1-0 before halftime. Scally played a key role in Gladbach doubling their lead after the hour mark.

The veteran right back raced upfield before keeping possession in bounds and cutting a pass back for Franck Honorat to one-time home. It marked Scally’s third assist of the season.

Eugen Polanski’s squad will next travel to FC Koln on March 21 in their final match before the international break. Scally will seek to stay injury-free ahead of a potential USMNT call up for friendlies against Belgium and Portugal.

In Italy, Weston McKennie and Juventus picked up three points on the road against Udinese. Ben Cremaschi suffered a first-half injury in Parma’s lopsided loss to Torino.

In England, Alyssa Thompson and Chelsea defeated Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Manchester United in the Women’s League Cup Final. Aidan Morris delivered another strong 90 minutes despite Middlesbrough’s home draw with Bristol City. Haji Wright had a quiet performance in Coventry City’s rare home loss to Southampton.

In Germany, Kristoffer Lund went the distance in FC Koln’s draw with Hamburg. John Brooks made his first club appearance in 693 days in Hertha Berlin’s draw.

In France, Tim Weah helped Marseille earn a home win over Auxerre.

Elsewhere, Ricardo Pepi started in PSV’s loss to NEC Nijmegen. Bryan Reynolds and Westerlo suffered a home loss to Club Brugge. George Bello and Donovan Pines both went the distance in their respective Austrian league matches. Danny Leyva helped Necaxa earn one point in Friday’s Liga MX draw.

  1. So to sum up the weekend so far,
Ream and Arfsten not off to good starts
Michael Bradley will be the next usmnt coach
John Brooks played 1 minute after not playing for almost 700 minutes
Timothy Chandler is still employed as a professional soccer player
At least Jedi went the full 90

  2. Americans at Home Update:
-USMNT GK Coach Toni Jimenez was on hand to watch Matt Turner vs Celentano. Celentano had possibly his worst game of his career. Cincy was bad overall but giving up a -1.84 goals prevented is not good for Roman’s chances. Turner was a +1.05. Jimenez watched Freese in person Saturday, Freeze gave up a scorcher from Darren Yappi.
-check out Peyton Miller’s goal against Cincy, it’s a beauty. MRob also had a stinker.
-Luna made his first appearance of the season. His replacement 18yr old Hezarkhani wasn’t great this week but has 2g on the season. Xavier Gozo also continues to play well for RSL, creates a lot of chances.
-As a Crew fan, Arfsten has done nothing this season. Playing more as a RM than a RWB.
-Schulte gave up a late goal (not much he could have done) but had his best match of the season until that point.
    – Berhalter with a goal and assist
-Brady was a negative goals prevented against DCU in a loss
-McGlynn had an 80 yd pass for a game winning assist.
    – Ream helped keep a clean sheet, but Messi and De Paul didn’t dress.
    – Roldan on the bench after playing midweek.
    -Sargent debuted, didn’t score
    ——————
I think that covers the MLS guys in contention for roster spots, plus the youth updates on Miller and the two RSL youths.
-Red Bull kids slowing a bit but kept it close for their vets to tie it late.
-SD kids ran out of gas after playing man down midweek. Sisniega faced more xGot in this match than Ferree faced all season. I’m guessing Ferree starts against Toluca. No one really seems to know if Manu Duah is US eligible.
-17 yr old Cooper Sanchez played sufficiently against Philly
-18 yr Harbor Miller started for LAG, created a couple chances

    • Hmmm I watched that Crew game Arfsten looked the most dangerous player. Multiple shots beating defenders on the dribble and had a shot off of the crossbar.

      Reply
      • Probably, my fandom making me less than objective, but he’s had 1 shot on target so far in 4 matches and no assists. The problem is he can beat guys, but then he always has to cut in on his right foot, and he finds two more defenders and no window to shoot. His xG and xA are not that different from last year, so the analytics nerds would tell me to be patient. That’s hard to do when you opened with Por, SKC, and Chi and only got 2 pts and then you blew a pt late by letting Espinoza dribble through 3/4 of your backline in the box in added time. When you watch Max every week, the beat guys down the line cut in to the top of box, ignore the striker run behind the CB, ignore Rossi unmarked at the top of the box, step over, step over, dribble into two defenders and shoot the ball 10 rows into the stands three times a game gets old.
        ———————
Crew generated .22 xG so saying he was the most dangerous isn’t saying anything. Schwake faced 0.08 xGot that’s less than Ferree saw in any of his matches. Oops fandom snuck out again.

    • Appreciated that, JR. Very good info.

I’d been hearing some buzz about the Red Bulls this year and finally got a look at them myself…my God. I don’t even know where to start. For starters, if the way his team has started the year is any indication, Michael Bradley is one heckuva coach. His guys were buzzing around like angry wasps, and playing slick, aggressive soccer – sophisticated progressive passing, and ambitious – they were trying audacious stuff all game, just missed finishing some fantastic sequences on multiple occasions. By midseason they’ll be pulling those off…and that team will be no fun for anyone to play. Despite the fact that Toronto tied the game 1-1, they didn’t look like they were having much fun yesterday either. The Red Bulls dominated the run of play. The thing that jumped off the field at me were the 17-year-old American kids – Julian Hall, Adri Memeti, Matthew Dos Santos. All three were legit…and Hall and Memeti were borderline dominant. At 17. They had “FUTURE USMNT STARTER” blinking over their heads like disco lights.

I honestly felt at times like I was watching an Arsene Wenger Arsenal side. Guys who barely needed to shave all over the field, passing so sophisticated it left you blinking, moving at a completely different speed than the opponent. I was left going: “who are these guys?”

If that was “slowing a bit”, I’d hate to see what they look like when they’re on. They had 67.7% possession, outshot TFC 17-12, and looked like the better team all day. And if they have even half TFC’s salary budget I’d be surprised. Other than Forsberg and Horvath the whole squad was a whole bunch of Who Dats.

      • Q: I saw probably the last 30 minutes of Red Bulls this week. Just meant Mehmeti and Hall aren’t scoring and assisting like they started, but unless your Messi scoring and assisting every match is a pretty tough bar to reach.
        ————
MB is running the modern Red Bull system, press like crazy to win the ball, but when you when actually play soccer instead of just lump it forward and hope. Actually have ideas on how you want to break down a defense. So different from Carnell or Marsch.

      • Papi,
-I warned people when Max first came into NT. He’s mostly fine for Columbus, but I’ve never thought he’s NT quality, especially at LB.
        —————————
Sullivan has been ok, once again Brad is putting on journeyman instead. Only 27 MLS minutes. Plenty of 17 and 18 yr olds making their marks while Carnell runs out Bedoya, Vassilev, plays Iloski out of position, and Brad’s latest journeyman warrior Annelo. I understand with MLS rosters it’s hard to run CL midweek and be successful on the weekend but Nashville, Vancouver, Miami, Seattle, and San Diego aren’t having much trouble. Brad’s castoff David Vazquez scored two against Toluca last week. You traded that to keep giving minutes to Bedoya? Union are a mess, near as I can tell Tanner is still suspended and the investigation into his alleged abuses continues because they made everyone who left sign NDAs so no one feels comfortable talking to the investigators (which signals they probably got some pretty good “severance” when they left).

    • After their midweek game, I figured that SDFC best outcome vs. Dallas would be a draw. They came within a couple of minutes of stoppage time of winning. In their game with Toluca they scored 3 goals while a man down. I think that’s pretty remarkable but it has gone largely unmentioned, even in the local press. I have watched a lot of soccer games in the last 25 years and I can’t recall another time a team has scored 3 goals while a man down. Regarding Duah, he went to high school in the US, in Santa Barbara. I don’t know what his status is, but he is probably at least several years away from becoming a US citizen. However, he is only 21, so he could possibly play a part in the next WC. SDFC defender Bombino has a bright future and is only 19. He is worth watching.

      Reply
      • I think most people were asleep when it went down, kicked off at like 10:30 CT. The Crew and Vancouver didn’t get much attention the last two years either until the semis or finals. Going to be tough without Duah in the away leg. That’s funny I asked you if you knew anything about his citizenship potential on the Macario article. I did a fairly deep Internet dive and found no mention of when he came to the US whatsoever. Even Reddit didn’t know.
