When Tim Howard took the field for the U.S. Men’s National Team against Nigeria on Saturday, he reached a mark that has only been passed by 14 other players in USMNT history.
A dozen years after making his debut on March 10, 2002, Howard earned his 100th cap on Saturday evening, making him the third goalkeeper in USMNT history to achieve a century of appearances. Since his first appearance, Howard has been to two Gold Cups, two Confederations Cups, and is set to start in his second World Cup after being a reserve in Germany 2006.
While the goalkeeping position has always been a strength for the U.S., it was easy to see early on that Howard was a special talent and it was only a matter of time before he wrested the starting position and held onto it for years to come.
Here is a look back at Howard’s journey to 100 caps in pictures (all photos by ISI Photos):
2002 (First cap vs. Ecuador)
2003 (vs. Argentina)
2004 (vs. Honduras)
2006 (vs. Poland)
2007 (vs. Mexico)
2008 (vs. Argentina)
2009 Confederations Cup (vs. Spain)
2010 World Cup (vs. Ghana)
2011 (vs. Mexico)
2012 (vs. Italy)
2013 (vs. Mexico after clinching a place in the 2014 World Cup)
2014 (vs. Nigeria)

The “2007” Mexico game was actually on February 6, 2008 in Houston.

the 2003 photo looks like a photo from the past few years.
hard to imagine him with hair. did u know his mom is Hungarian? wonder if they ever kick themselves for not giving hm a call-up
He deserved to get lei’d this weekend.
Best memory is starting the break against Algeria. Love Timmy, especially as he has matured and doesn’t show up the defenders all game.
Yep, I love his “I am the first attacker” mindset. Showed it to Nigeria this weekend too. You would think that our opponents would expect that by now.
He was downright NASTY v. Argentina.
After seeing this I now believe 100% that Tim Howard is actually a vampire
Never knew he had a tattoo of New Jersey on his belly lol
It’s just not right that the man has hair. The aura of fear lessens with it.
Nice Elbow of God, Maradoughnuts
Legends are born when the previous are surpassed. Last chapter on Tim Howard has not yet been written.
how much of a LEGEND is he?
better than Friedel and Keller? 1 of the top 10 keepers in PL history?
