Many teams from MLS have already started to restrucuture their rosters for 2016, and on Wednesday, the Seattle Sounders made some surprising decisions.

Among those who had their options declined by the Sounders included midfielders Marco Pappa, 28, and Gonzalo Pineda, 33, as well as forward Chad Barrett and defenders Zach Scott and Leo Gonzalez. The other players to have their options declined were goalkeeper Troy Perkins, defender Andres Correa and midfielders Micheal Azira and Thomas.

The Sounders chose to retain 11 players on Wednesday, including goalkeeper Stefan Frei, centerback Chad Marshall, right back Tyrone Mears and midfielder Lamar Neagle. Goalkeeper Charlie Lyon, defenders Dylan Remick, Damion Lowe, Jimmy Ockford and Oniel Fisher, as well as midfielder Aaron Kovar and forward Vic Mansaray, were also kept on.

Meanwhile, Andy Rose and Andy Cravem were both offered a new contract with the club.

“In our league, keeping teams together is a consistent challenge under our roster restraints, and this season is no different,” Sounders General Manager and President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey said in a release. “These types of decisions are never easy, and conversations with several players are ongoing. As we continue to shape our 2016 roster we’ll have additional announcements to share in the weeks ahead.”

The Sounders now have 21 active players on their roster.

Here are some more news and notes from MLS:

DYNAMO RE-SIGN BARNES, BRUIN, DERIC

Despite all three players having options to move elsewhere, the Houston Dynamo were able to re-sign three key pieces of its 2015 identity on Wednesday.

The Dynamo announced that they had come to terms with Giles Barnes, Will Bruin and goalkeeper Tyler Deric.

Barnes, 27, and Bruin, 26, have been an important part of the Dynamo’s attack in recent years. Barnes has scored 27 goals since becoming a member of the Dynamo in 2012. Bruin, meanwhile, has scored 52 goals, including postseason figures, since joining the team in 2011.

“I talked to Owen a lot about it. I told Owen ‘Hey look I want to be a part of this, but I want to win championships,’” Bruin said in a press release. “I don’t want to say I want to win right now, but I do. After long discussions with Owen we both feel we have the pieces right now to be contenders right now. I truly do believe that. I wouldn’t stick around if I didn’t truly believe this was a good team. I believe this is a good team, and I really do believe with the team and pieces we have we can be in the playoffs next year.”

Deric has been with the Dynamo since 2009, but had his breakout year in 2015, starting in 31 games while recording seven shutouts. Throughout the season, he demonstrated his quick-reflexes and reaction time, making a handful of eye-opening saves.

REPORT: ZACH PFEFFER TO RETURN TO UNION IN 2016

The Philadelphia Union have apparently decided to keep one of its homegrown midfielders for another season.

According to CBS Philly, Zach Pfeffer will re-join the Union, as the club has reportedly decided to exercise his option for 2016. The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team midfielder is expected to make approximately $100,000 next season, $40,000 more than he made this season.

Pfeffer has been a part of the Union since 2011, but saw close to 1000 minutes of action this season. He appeared in 21 games, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

JAIME PENEDO SIGNS WITH DEPORTIVO SAPRISSA

Panamanian goalkeeper Jaime Penedo has reportedly joined a regular CONCACAF Champions League contestant.

The 34-year-old netminder has reportedly signed a two-year contract with Deportivo Saprissa, according to La Nacion, and will be introduced on Wednesday evening.

Penedo joined the LA Galaxy in 2013 on a free transfer and proved to be one of the best netminders in the league. In total, including postseason numbers, he started 61 games and had 21 shutouts.

The LA Galaxy decided to waive Penedo following the 2015 Gold Cup.

  1. Remember when someone on here a few weeks ago tried to make an argument for Chad Barrett as being a contender for call-up and to start for the Nats?

  2. I don’t know what happened in the background, but on the surface, it makes no sense to me why LA let Penedo go. It’s hard to question Bruce when he’s been money more times than not for so long…
