Peter Vermes has read the reports regarding interest from Europe, and even acknowledged their validity. However, his focus remains solely on the task of retooling his current club in Sporting Kansas City.

The Kansas City Star reported in November that Vermes had been earmarked for a pair of Premier League jobs as well as a potential gig with a European national team. Naturally, Vermes admits that the interest has sparked his curiosity, as the idea of moving abroad is an opportunity rarely afforded to the American coach.

Yet, it is not an opportunity that he is prepared to focus on, as Vermes remains fully committed to reloading Sporting KC ahead of the 2016 season.

“I think the reporting was accurate,” Vermes said Monday on a conference call. “As I’ve said, I think that any time someone is interested in you, you wind up being curious and interested, but my focus continues to be on Sporting Kansas City. It’s the nature of the business, whether it’s players, staff members, our game is not just in the United States. It’s an international game, so there can come suitors from foreign lands and you can be curious, but my focus remains on Sporting Kansas City.

“What I love about Sporting Kansas City, and I’ve always said this and I maintain it, is that I love the project,” Vermes added. “One of the things, right now, is that I’m excited to rebuild our team and get ready for next season. It goes back to what the individual situation. It’s not just ‘oh, I’d love to be in this country’ or something like that.”

Vermes, who played in Hungary, Spain, Holland and the U.S. throughout a 14-year professional career, took charge of Sporting KC in 2009 and has since led the club to an MLS Cup and two U.S. Open Cups.

What do you think of Vermes’ statement? Glad that he remains focused on Sporting KC? How would he fare if he did make the move to Europe?

  1. “a potential gig with a European national team”. That would be great to see for a year or 2 as an assistant coach then he takes over the USMNT. The more experience he gets there will benefit the USMNT.

  2. Hope he gets the chance and takes it.

On a side note, I can’t stand when players and coaches refer to teams/organizations as ‘a project’.
