D.C. United disappointed with loss to Union

CHESTER, PA– D.C. United’s frustration over 90 minutes on Friday night turned into disappointment as head coach Ben Olsen and his players picked out what went wrong after the 1-0 defeat to Philadelphia.

Olsen started with the call that led to the Union’s 90th-minute free kick. The initial set piece was cleared, but the Union pumped the ball back into the box to set up Richie Marquez’s game-winner.

“I’m disappointed that we lost the game in the closing moments, but I’m disappointed because it’s a poor call from the referee to give them a set piece there,” Olsen said. “I’m disappointed that we weren’t men enough to see out the game despite that call.”

The boiling point on the field appeared to come much earlier than second half stoppage time as Luciano Acosta turned down Olsen’s attempt at a handshake when the Argentinian left the pitch in the 61st minute.

Acosta told reporters the incident was nothing more than a miscommunication.

“I understand and respect the decision,” Acosta said. “There wasn’t really anything that serious, we were just trying to say something to each other and neither of us understood what each of were saying so.”

Olsen explained the 21-year-old playmaker is still going through an adjustment process with his new teammates.

“I think he was forcing it a little bit; it’s not him, that’s part of this process,” Olsen said. “But he’ll figure it out. It’s part of the process; he is figuring himself out, his teammates still figuring him out. Still think he’s got to make the right choice more and play simple. Those guys are going to double-team him, triple team him, so he’s got to make life easier on himself.”

If the Black and Red were able to take any positives out of Friday’s loss, it was the play of goalkeeper Travis Worra, who has filled in admirably for the injured Bill Hamid and Andrew Dykstra.

“He is making saves,” Olsen said. “That’s what goalkeepers do in this league you know. We are starting to expect him to play like an MLS goalkeeper and that’s what he played like tonight. So I’m happy for him but in the end we lost so not really in the mood to praise too many guys, including myself.”

Regardless of the individual play at Talen Energy Stadium, the D.C. players know they must finish matches better in order to remain a fixture in the top half of the Eastern Conference table.

“I thought we defended well the whole game,” center back Steve Birnbaum said. “We were under pressure, but that’s no excuse, we got to find a way and be for the last couple minutes of the game.”

  1. Worra was making some nice saves. He appears to be at least an MLS caliber goalkeeper. Make Hamid earn his starting spot back!
