Hertha Berlin wasn’t pleased with his decision to participate in the Copa America Centenario this summer, but John Brooks’ play with the U.S. Men’s National Team has earned him praise from the German club.

The 23-year-old centerback has made waves this summer, not only within U.S. circles but around the tournament, because of his solid play at the heart of the American defense. According to BZ, Brooks would command a transfer fee of $22.63 million (€20 million) should he move on from Hertha Berlin, with the report citing the Premier League as a possible destination.

With Brooks under contract at Hertha until 2019, the club remains adamant that they want to keep their budding star, however, his continued ascent may prompt him to move elsewhere.

“No! He has long-term contract here, and we are delighted if he continues to play such a good tournament,” Hertha sporting director Michael Preetz told BZ.

Brooks has started all four of the USMNT’s matches at the Copa America, including their most recent 2-1 win in the quarterfinals against Ecuador.

      • Vic, no club likes seeing their players on the national teams. Just a chance for the multi-million dollar star(s) to injure themselves and hurt their chances of pushing for a title next season

      • Coaches don’t complain when players go to World Cup or Euro cup. They complain when players are used for something important like friendlies. By complaining about Brooks, Hertha coach makes it seem like Copa America isn’t important.

      • What kind of $@&$ head question is this? As if you fing know. This is one of the big problems in our soccer community, a lot of know it also, who really don’t know it all.

Once you get past your anger issues the questions intent and purpose is fairly obvious. If it’s not, take a deep breath and try again.

  1. “now I see why Hertha was so opposed to him playing in the Copa..”
Why? Afraid he’ll do well and increase his value?

  2. matter of time. he has UCL quality! — now I see why Hertha was so opposed to him playing in the Copa..

$22m would be huge record for a US-international! Jozy is currently the record holder at $10m right?

    • Yep! Along with Manchester City and a variety of other high profile clubs. JAB is the real deal, I’ve been saying it for years now. Miazga, CCV, EPB, and JAB are going to be our CB rotation for the next 10 years at least.

      • Until the last two games, hes been one of our weakest players. Not sure if youre bragging, or showing off your stupidity

      • Let him develop before annointing him the next Adu or Green. We’re not far trmoved from his terrible Gold Cup performance. Just give him time.

      • Rumors are rumors. Who knows what’s true. Remember all the big clubs we heard were after Hyndman but then he ended up at Bournemouth.

  3. I hope dortmund pick him up. They lost a left sided CB in hummels, and while Brooks is a different kind of player he could slot in nicely.

    • exactly what i was thinking. i don’t follow them enough to know who they have in the pipeline, but he would be a good replacement for hummels, and it would be a nice incremental step up for him.

only thing is i can’t see them paying that high a transfer fee.

      • Nice thought. Though Dortmund just signed former Barca player Marc Bartra, Subotic looks out of favor with Thomas Tuchel at the helm. So they will likely be in the market for another CB to round out their rotation of Sokratis, Bender, and Bartra.

  4. I think it is a bit of a long shot. But both Manchester Clubs maybe in need of CB’s. Kompany was pretty weak down the stretch and aging.

      • Chelsea might as well use the potentially John Stone’s money to buy John Brooks and play both American CB’s. Just kidding! Brooks has a good chance to be a fantastic CB in the Premier League, but Miazga has ways to go!

      • Why move to a weaker league like the Premier League? Hertha Berlin are no slouch, they were in third behind München and Dortmund for much of the season.

  5. Ah, yes. Another classic example of clubs enjoying players performing well for their respective national team when it raises their transfer value and hating it 99% of the other time.
