Atlanta United signs U.S. U-19 forward Vasquez

Atlanta United certainly appear to be building a true contender ahead of their inaugural season, and the good news continues with another signing.

Atlanta have signed U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team forward Brandon Vasquez as the ninth player on their roster. The 18-year-old forward joins from Club Tijuana, and has earned significant playing time in the U.S. youth set up, most recently with the U-19s.

“Brandon has the natural goal scoring ability you look for in young forwards.” said technical director Carlos Bocanegra. “He’ll have every opportunity to contribute to the first team and to develop and progress with the National Team.”

Vasquez joins the team as a discovery signing and has notched four goals for the U-19s in 2016.

Let’s pump the breaks a bit. Expansion teams rarely enjoy success their first year for a number of reasons.

  2. I wish we would go out and get Jack Mc and Rico Clark! Bring home the hometown heroes. Those guys have been holding down no repping Atlanta soccer for a long time.

    • It does not take much effort o discover that there are a lot of Americans on the TJ roster as the Xolos have been actively scouting and signing players from the US for the last 5 years.

I think they have about 8 players on their Sr roster, about 7 or so on their u-19/u-21 team and about another dozen on the various youth teams. While some were born in the US and claim dual citizenship w/ Mexico, some just came from the US and had family connections or spoke enough Spanish to be recruited. As Carlos Bocanegra is from So. Cal, he know where to look for cheap (and mostly undiscovered) players. The LAG just hopes that many of the Mexican team do not swoop in and poach many of their academy players. One of their GK is (was) on the starting 11 for the Mexican u17 national team.
