Following months of speculation, Terrence Boyd has found a new home, one that will see him remain in the German Bundesliga.

Darmstadt 98 announced on Tuesday that the club has signed the American forward from RB Leipzig on a deal that runs until June 2018. Darmstadt currently sits in last on the Bundesliga table and is managed by former Toronto FC midfielder Torsten Frings.

“I am glad that the move to Darmstadt 98 has worked,” Boyd said, “and want to jump in immediately to make the supposedly impossible still possible.”

“We are very happy that Terrence Boyd has chosen for us and wants to go his way with us,” Frings added.

Prior to the move, Boyd had been linked with several clubs as his future with RB Leipzig looked bleak. After returning from an extended injury layoff, Boyd joined an RB Leipzig team pushing for the title alongside Bayern Munich, limiting the forward to matches with the reserve team. Boyd had been linked with several clubs, including the New York Red Bulls, but ultimately sealed a transfer to Darmstadt, who are in need of forward help after scoring just 11 goals in 17 matches.

Darmstadt currently sits seven points from safety ahead of Saturday’s clash with FC Koln.

  1. This will be his first time in the Bundesliga, having played in the 2Bundesliga and Austrian Bundesliga so to get a chance in the first division after having only played in the 4th division this season is a big development for TB.

  2. a tricky situation here for me. On the one hand, TB90 will presumably get competitive minutes in the Bundesliga with a relegation bound Damstadt. On the other hand, he is coming off of a major injury with limited game time and if Damstadt do get relegated he is stuck in the second division. For someone his age that would be disapointing, but i guess a positive would be that he hasn’t played much over 2 years now so any game time in any division is good! Make it happen TB90!

      • Tut, contract is for a year and a half (June 2018). So all of next season would be in the second division assuming they get relegated.

    • I imagine his hope is that he does so well that even if his club gets relegated he will be picked up by a first division team. If he gets the playing time, it’s still better than sitting on the bench for a top team.

  3. Hope the young man gets a chance to play regularly. Hopefully this is a situation where Boyd gets to play through his ups and downs, can shake off the rust of not having played regular minutes for years, and can gain some confidence.
